Cranberry red range sounds great with the cream and black.
I am struggling to picture the creamy/beige floor tiles. I think the word beige is putting me off Grin

teta · 26/03/2011 09:51

I think it sounds really lovely. We are also at the same stage and are planning on a blue range and skimming stone units with blue green island plus cashmere gold granite and travertine tiles and walnut on the island. My tiles are biscuity colour [a.k.a. beigeGrin].Whats the problem with beige?

Pinkcushion · 26/03/2011 10:05

I hate black granite...horrible stuff. Everything else I could live with but I wouldn't get very excited by - too traditional.

lalalonglegs · 26/03/2011 14:18

I'm not mad on black granite but the marble I am guessing will be more veined and interesting. I'd go for a darker floor.

TuTu · 26/03/2011 20:36

Thanks all. Yes agree will dump the beige word, and go with biscuity!

Longlegs - I do wonder if the light colour is going to do my head in with trying to keep clean. Have dark tiles at the minute which you get away with ignoring for a very long time before face up to mopping over. But we had thought would go with lighter tiles to brighten the place up.

Teta your's sounds absolutely fab, really like the sound of it. Glad to hear someone else going for a different coloured range, as all the kitchen brochures seem to be black, cream or stainless steel.

DH is the one who wants the dark granite (I would be very happy to go down the good laminate route) - its a kind of mottled black. He's pretty set on it..... unless I can get Mumsnet to change his mind!

I really like the blue rangemaster but am having problems seeing the colour in real life as the shops always have cream and black on display.have you seen your cranberry one yet?.Is your kitchen a dark or light room?.If it's a bright room you can get away with using darker tiles.I'm using lighter tiles because my kitchen is in an old edwardian house and is very dark and north-facing and i need lots of light reflecting surfaces.I've picked filled and honed travertine so the surface isn't shiny and won't show the dirt.

mamatomany · 26/03/2011 20:55

Don't go for a darker floor, we have black and it's a nightmare to keep clean, lighter ones look cleaner unless something spills which you'd clean up anyway.

TuTu · 26/03/2011 21:55

Got to see a cranberry one today in a kitchen showroom which made my day, as before this was just in brochure had seen it, and that what was worrying me. The one today was with a cream kitchen (wood worktop), and it did look great. Conscious that it might not be everybodys cup of tea, so was interested to hear opinions.
Our kitchen is quite dark too. Just googled filled & honed travertine tiles - sending you a thumbs up on these Teta!
Mamatomany - interesting about the black as wouldnt have known it was hard to keep clean.

Bohica · 26/03/2011 22:03

I agree with mama, we have cream units & quary tile dark flooring & it's a nightmare to clean let alone look shiney & I'm Envy of friends biscuity tilled flooring.

Be careful with the marble worktop as we have heard a lot of horror stories about keeping it clear & scratch free.

Everything sounds lovely, I can't wait for our kitchen fitters to start a week tomorrow - will probably regret saying that.

cece · 26/03/2011 22:07

I am not a huge fan of black granite. I think there are some lovely lighter granites around that look more interesting.

I agree go for a mid tone floor.

My friend has a handpainted kitchen and it does chip.

TuTu · 27/03/2011 18:38

Right so biscuity floor it is!

No matter which worktop we have researched they all seem to have their drawbacks. DH had always wanted granite so he still wants to go with that. Might see if I can work him round to a lighter shade though :)

Cece, yes think chipping is going to be a risk, as my brother has only had his in a year and showing a bit of wear and tear already. But have fallen in love with the warm bright look, after years and years with really dark oak.

herhonesty · 27/03/2011 19:23

i dont like the colour combo. not sure red in a kitchen works. particularly with the black.

cece · 27/03/2011 19:32

I agree about te red. Not a colour that I would choose but I often think it looks nice in other people's houses. I prefer green tbh

TuTu · 27/03/2011 20:09

Thanks for the comments - I do want to hear what you honestly think, as if we sell the house in a few years want to be careful that our new kitchen is something that will appeal to others, as well as giving us pleasure in the meantime.

I really like the idea of a black worktop contrasted with a cranberry range.I think it will look very striking tbw.I am also having painted units - was thinking of using F&B .But is this wise with 4 dc's who never stop eating?.

that said we have traditional slate which is more mottled colours running through it which covers a multitude of sins. but its more traditional looking and your colour scheme sounds quite modern.

GrendelsMum · 30/03/2011 19:39

Well, if you really want me to be honest - i think the black worktops are going to date. BUT I don't think that you should spend too much time second guessing what poeple might think in 5 years time.

randomimposter · 30/03/2011 20:47

interesting on the whole flooring thing...
our last kitchen we chose dark grey ceramic tiles and was really pleased with them. Didn't think it was a problem ref crumbs/dirt etc. Planning next kitchen which is in a semi basement (so have some small concerns about light) and am contemplating a much lighter floor, but am worried it'll look a bit bling??

FWIW our last kitchen was white gloss units, dark grey worktop and floor and F&B red earth walls. It looked gorgeous :)

Ponks · 30/03/2011 20:59

I think the cranberry range sounds lovely with the cream and black.

Surprised about comments re grey v beige floor tiles. We have decided to go with grey floor tiles on the basis of showing less dirt. Would have liked beige but the sample tiles we chose seemed to show dirt much more. And tbh the floor is not going to be mopped every day! Blush

TuTu · 30/03/2011 23:45

Thanks again all. GrendelsMum I think you are probably dead right about not trying to second guess what will be in trend in 5 years time. We had a kitchen guy out this evening and he was saying that the American fridges are already going out of fashion - these were considered so cool only a couple of years ago. We want just normal fridge anyway, but it does make you realise that things do date quickly, so we are best going with what we want.
On the floor tiles, the sample tiles that I have taken out are fairly showing the dirt, but I think I can learn to turn a blind eye, as certainly wont be mopping every day either

maggiethecat · 31/03/2011 00:03

We have white units, black granite worktop and red wall above hob - colour combo is striking. Yours should be even nicer because I think black, cream and red go together better than black, white and red.

ninedragons · 31/03/2011 00:10

Not mad keen on the black/cream/red colour combination, if I'm honest - I would get the granite in a different colour. It sounds a wee bit Sixty Minute Makeover, to be brutal.

Have you considered cork for the floor? comes in much sexier colours now than it did in the 80s, and it's warm underfoot and things don't break if you drop them.

TuTu · 01/04/2011 14:35

going to have to start counting the Fors and Againsts..... all equally welcome!

hester · 01/04/2011 17:40

Very interested in this thread because I have just painted my kitchen units a kind of pale stone/cream colour. There are dark red tiles behind and black laminate worktops. I need to replace one of the worktops.

Is black really naff? What would you advise instead - bearing in mind I can't afford to go beyond laminate? And don't want wood because I KNOW we won't mop the water off it and it will go mouldy within minutes.
