Bedroom flooring problem - alternatives to carpet or wood?

EldonAve · 24/03/2011 12:06

Bedrooms in our house currently have bare wooden boards
They are tatty, gappy and dusty
Hall & loft are carpeted

DH is v allergic to all sorts of stuff incl dust mites

We need to redo our bedroom floor but what can we have apart from carpet?

I have a laminate flooring in my bedroom and am absolutely delighted with it. Put a sound underlay (green type), and it would not make noise when walking.
I have small children who have tummy bug sometimes and I could not imagine cleaning a carpet or a gappy floor from all the stuff that comes from tummy bug.
If you want natural and have money, choose bamboo flooring - my friend has one and it has nice warm feel.

does coir count as carpet? it doesnt have a pile as such so cant harbour as many mites as a carpet i wouldn't have thought

i ahve it in my bedroom and love it

Why not get a large rug, easier to keep dust mite free and cheaper than new flooring throughout?

Ponders · 24/03/2011 22:46

agree with confusedperson, laminate plus thick green underlay boards is a fantastic bedroom flooring for children; fantastic for cleaning up the inevitable spills & vomit & other childish messes. If you think it feels a bit uncosy you could get a thin cotton rug from Ikea or somewhere which will go in the washing machine.

(once they're older though the soundproofing of the underlay loses its effectiveness a bit, with guitar amps & tapping feet & rolling chairs & whatnot Wink)

Agree with cyb- coir and sisal are the way forward.

Ponders · 24/03/2011 22:52

not for vomit they're not Grin

tethersend · 24/03/2011 22:54

We have hardwood but if we didn't I would laminate/lino the place from corner to corner. Much easier to keep clean. DH is insisting on carpeting the top floor. I am not looking forward to keeping the dust under control.

Another alternative is the adhesive tiles which look like laminate flooring. Very easy to install and cheaper than laminate. If one is damaged you just replace the one piece.

happybubblebrain · 24/03/2011 23:02

I would go for the rug option, laminate anywhere looks yuk.

Ponders · 24/03/2011 23:05

[begs to differ]

chickchickchicken · 24/03/2011 23:05

dont laugh . . . but have you thought about cushioned vinyl? it really is lots better than it used to be. we have it in son's bedroom as he has allergies and it is very easy to clean and quiet. it was more expensive than laminate but it has lasted 10 years so far. we needed flooring that could withstand being mopped - sometimes every day when he was very ill. the dust just sits on it so very easy to hoover and mop
unless you can wash a rug weekly at 60 degrees - temp needed to kill dust mites - i wouldnt advise a rug

thanks for all the suggestions

I'd prefer coir or sisal
