Front Doors

We moved into our house 5 years ago and the front door was a horrible glass affair which we replaced almost immediately. The door frame was a bit crumbly and looked worn, so we also thought about replacing that as we knew it would need to be done at some point, but we didn't have much money to spend on it. Anyway we looked into UPVC and didn't like it (all white) and it was expensive too as we have a semi circular window above the door which we also wanted done. Anyway we finally decided to sort out the door frame at a later date and just get a more solid, secure front door. We bought a wooden door and painted it black, it looks lovely and didn't cost anywhere near the UPVC quotes.

Anyway fast forward 5 years and the door frame is about to collapse completely. We didn't too well on the door painting either and it tends to stick a bit when it's been raining - needs a good kick to fully close! And I now appreciate why the previous owner had glass in the front door too as the hallway is quite dark. I saw a lovely UPVC door a few streets from ours which is green and it's got me considering this option again.

So I went to a local, recommended, doors and windows company today and a composite door (we really don't want it to look UPVC / be white) will be approx. £1200 - not including the window above which he's going to come and have a look at before doing a proper quote. Is this an OK quote? Are front doors just this expensive? I thought up to £1000 OK, but if the window's going to be expensive too it could be getting on for double that. I was a bit floored by it really - it's only a 2 bed terrace so percentage wise, it's going to be a bloody expensive bit of the house!! Any advice or recommendations on what to look out for or companies you'd recommend?? We're in Birmingham. Thanks v much.

PS - Sorry about the length of post for such a simple question Blush

we had a composite door by rock door last year for about this price and it included a new frame.

We had a composite door in October for £902 including the frame. Got it from a firm local to us (East Midlands) who also did our double glazing. It has been mistaken for wood and we love it (blue with stained glass).

So, it's not really really miles above the norm then ... gosh. I know security wise they are good as they are recommended by the police and they have an excellent Which? rating - which could well account for the extra couple of 100's. Maybe we just need to bite the bullet, got to do something after all...
