Can we do this in 7 weeks? Long post alert!

Ok, we bought our house to renovate just over 6 years ago. Long story but have not yet started - unexpected illness dh and severe financial problems - 2 dcs in 2 years! We are definitely on the upturn after a couple of awful years, though Smile.

Long-term aim is to remortgage and extend the house which will double it's size. We can't afford that yet - hopefully next year.

Sooooo - house is 2 (very large) bedrooms. Dd 2.10 is still in a cot in the one good room. She can't go into a bed in there as lots of child-unfriendliness - storage containers, rowing machine, wardrobe with glass doors.

We are in the other bedroom which is a mess and which we are going to turn into 2 small rooms for the dcs. Poor ds 1.7 went from cot in there to camping in dining room/office. He has never had his own room and we would like our dining room back!

The bedroom needs several layers of old wallpaper stripping, replastering in some areas of crumbling plaster on walls, revolting artex ceiling replastered, thick chipped woodwork stripping or at least sanding down. It is double aspect, so needs a stud wall building down middle and plastering or plaster boarding. Then new doorway knocked through from hall to one half, door and frame. Floor has fairly decent boards which we may sand, but could alternatively get some neutral carpet (currently have very thin scary colour carpet put in just before we moved in and no underlay!)

I would dearly like dd to be in her new room for her birthday in 7 weeks' time. Dh pretty much rolled his eyes at me when I announced this; we both are terrible prevaricators in getting anything done and are very busy with work and kids, but I feel that unless we start setting some deadlines to get something positive done with the house, we will never get anywhere until that mythical day when we suddenly have enough money to pay someone to do it all!

Would you try in this timescale? We both have weekends off, dh has 2 weekdays free when dcs are at nursery, I am at work approx 60 hours a week, he looks after dc's rest of weekdays. Dh can do all of the above himself and has some help available from friends. We have all of the equipment needed and for the first time in several years have the 1-2K needed to do it all properly.

Thoughts please Blush

go for it - nothing like having a deadline to work towardsSmile

You'll need a plumber as well to move radiators if necessary and electrician to create new lighting points and separate switches - is your husband able to do those jobs because, if not, I'd be tempted to book the tradespeople for five weeks' time and that means he has to meet that deadline. You should be able to strip a bedroom (unless it's ballroom size) in two days even with really stubborn paper, building a stud wall, you'd probably need a friend but that's a day, plastering 3 days. It is doable but he has to want to do it.

ok, sounds very doable. You have hit the nail on the head, lala, dh is not particularly bothered about getting it done. Well, he is in theory but less so in real life! He has had a lot to contend with in the last few years. So have I, but I have a bit more going on to distract me.

Ok, so should be able to get the walls stripped in a week - 10 days. Another week for plastering. Another week for stud wall. Dh can change the rads -they don't need moving but could do with new smaller ones. Will need an electrician. I am quite happy to then do the painting and already have curtains, cushion covers etc made up - I'm itching to set to with fairy lights and soft furnishings for them both!

Will keep you posted.

Yeah, take the plug off your TV and computer.

TBH your being optimistic but go for it, if your not done you should at least have the major parts done and might as well carry on then.
