Just had a quote from the Karndean people to fit the most basic Karndean (Knight Tile) in our new kitchen diner.

£1300!

I am astounded, we had expected circa £900 up to £1000 but not £1300.

The area is 25msq, but thats in an empty room, there will be a kitchen going in which will obviously take up some floor space.

Was I being unrealistic and this is a reasonable price?

Wow I always knew Karndean was expensive - a friend got something similar for half the price although she was doing her whole downstairs so may have got a big discount - I'll ask her where from.

mamatomany · 03/03/2011 11:24

Rhino lino is a very good alternative £500 instead of the £2000 we were quoted.

linspins · 03/03/2011 13:25

I've heard lots about Karndean on Mumsnet, but have never really looked closely at the product. We now need a flooring for our kitchen diner too - what exactly is Karndean? Confused Is it a posh lino? How do they do that edging effect?
Your quote does sound like a lot of money, let's hope someone can come and tell you (and me) where to get it cheaper!

I second Rhinofloor. We have it in our kitchen and it hasn't a mark on it,despite chairs being dragged across it,broken glass being ground into it and other batterings. You just wipe it and marks vanish. It is great and well worth the money [about £26 a square metre I think].

Aworryingtrend · 03/03/2011 15:29

Thanks all, im interested in hearing more about Rhinofloor- Im googling but the only websites coming up are eg flooringdirect.com- nothing for the company itself? I know I can order samples but I'd like to go and see some in a stockist somewhere as well .

We managed to save ourselves a fortune with our Karndean by buying it from the internet and then getting an independent fitter to fit it. I think we paid about 800 pounds for about 28 square metres I think, including fitting.

Aworryingtrend · 03/03/2011 16:24

Daisy i was tempted to do that but then does it invalidate the guarantee etc?

We bought our Amtico online and got a local Amtico fitter to fit it. Our builder recommended him.

I bought 42 m2 of the stuff {faints at the memory of the cost}

MrsSharp · 03/03/2011 16:29

Does that price include the floor preparation? You need to lay Karndean on a near-perfect level floor, so may need to screed or ply first?

DaisySteiner · 03/03/2011 17:06

Sorry, when I said independent fitter, I meant I didn't get him through John Lewis or whoever, but he was a registered Karndean fitter. My price included laying ply first btw.

cece · 04/03/2011 14:02

Yes we had some screed put down first. He then went away and returned 24 hours later to lay the floor.

maryjane71 · 04/03/2011 20:43

Our quote for Karndean for our small kitchen was £700. We're going for good old lino. I'd forgotten about rhino lino. DH's arguement is we can replace lino if need be and it would still be cheaper Smile

IHeartKingThistle · 04/03/2011 22:47

Whoa, that's a lot! I saw an ad for their new parquet-look one and was quite taken with it for my hallway and kitchen.

androbbob · 04/03/2011 23:02

Another Karndean here - in the hall, kitcen and dining room - seem to think it was around 50 sq.m. and we paid around £1100 fitted - floors were all level and he just applied a screed. We had one of the more expensive ranges - summer oak and 18 months later it still looks fab!

Aworryingtrend · 07/03/2011 08:51

Thanks all- we did the tour of flooring places this weekend and we are both still in love with Amtico/karndean, unfortunately! We took a plan of the kitchen with us and it seems that by the time we take out what the units will cover we could lose about 5sqm which puts it bvack in the affordable price bracket, just!

I did ask about Rhinofloor but apparently they have gone bust? Not sure if thats right but woukld explain why I couldnt find it online.

I also ordered some samples of bamboo flooring as well and they do look nice- just not as 'perfect' nice as the Amtico/Karndean. Damn me and my expensive tastes.

Slight hijack (sorry OP, can't help you, we ended up paying even more than that for ceramic floor (it is lovely) in kitchen due to my expensive tastes Blush) but whilst on the subject of floors, does anyone have any experience of Elesgo Aquafloor?

We are in final design mode for bathroom - tiles out of the question because of the (massive) amount of movement in the floorboards. I suggested Amtico - builder is not an accredited fitter and is wary - he has suggested the Elesgo Aquafloor, and I am panicky not entirely sure.

stealthsquiggle · 07/03/2011 13:39

sorry - stars went a bit wrong there Blush
