You need to drill a hole with a 6mm drill bit, squeeze a bit of no more nails in, insert a brown rawl plug, then screw a screw in with a bit poking out, and then leave to set for a few minutes, then hang the mirror with some sturdy picture wire. Should be fine.

except to add - make sure you are hanging it on a solid wall! Ie not a stud wall or plaster board.

Sorry, it sounds obvious but you never know...

Even on a solid wall, if you're hanging something really heavy then ideally make sure your drill goes right through the plaster and hits brick.

Has anyone any idea where I can buy windowfilm to keep heat out of my south facing porch? I've tried 2 sites on the internet but they are so expensive. There must be somewhere I can buy the stuff?

theyoungvisiter · 02/03/2011 09:33

Hi waterworks, no idea I'm afraid. I would start a new thread in the Property section with your question in the title - you'll get more responses that way.

Bit worried about the OP - are you lying prone beneath a giant mirror?!

BoffinMum · 02/03/2011 18:19

I think she may be in a modern house which has collapsed. Wink

There are special rawl plugs for cavity walls so that might help as well. They are blue.

hifi · 02/03/2011 18:25

you need to get a "J hook" it will take all the weight

piratecat · 02/03/2011 18:27

if you are hanging on a stud wall, you need to find where the wooden joists are or uprights.

Sometimes they won't be where you think you have to put the screws. I had to put two screws in and line up the mirror to the screw holes in the wall iyswim. Then mark the mirror by pressing against those screws so the screws marked the mirror ( heavy wooden mirror.)

Waterworks get your own thread...only joking!!!

theyoungvisiter and BoffinMum fear not my mirror has not killed me..yet!

Am taking all yer tips on board, definately think I need two fixings not sure whether to go for screws or industrial looking hooks possibly hifi's J hooks. My confidence has beat a retreat- will crank it up by the weekend and let you know how its gone or not!!!

The other thing to do if you want it somewhere in the middle of the joists is to affix a board onto the wall and screw into it in several places thus spreading the weight of the mirror. No More Nails really is brill though - we have a dartboard stuck up with it!!! (Don't tell hubby - he spent ages trying to get the right rawl plugs etc and it fell down about 6 hours later - bit of No More Nails = no more problem!!)
