Would you use neighbour's "mate" or do I need to grow a pair?

We 'share' a (brick) shed with our neighbours (each own an 'L' shaped section from a rectangular building) and the roof needs replaced. It's not possible to replace our section separately.

To cut a long story short, they have finally got their roofer mate to come and quote for the work (after originally mentioning it months ago, mentioned again by dh a month or two ago). He came Thursday but hasn't let them know how much yet but he expected it to be about £800. Neighbour will dispose of old roof.

I had also arranged a quote. We have used this guy for work before, he is reliable, turns up when he says he will, etc. His quote included skip hire to dispose of old roof but if I take the cost of this off, his quote comes out at £795.

I guess I feel like the friend hasn't been particularly reliable and I'm a bit worried that it'll be the same with the job; he'll fit it in in his 'spare' time, sort of thing. I'd much prefer to use the guy we got a quote from, particularly if the friend isn't any/much cheaper. Unfortunately I think the neighbours are set on using their mate.

Am now stressed about it and I'm really not good at this sort of thing. Tbh I find the neighbours a bit scary Blush.

Can you fudge the issue slightly by saying that you would like to take up references from mate's most recent clients - and then say you'd prefer not to go with him if (a) he doesn't provide them (b) there's a squeak of complaint from any of them? All the time stress that you have someone else in mind who has given very competitive quote and who has been reliable when you have used him in the past.
