Would it be crazy to consider...

....renting a furnished house but putting the furniture into storage?

We were ideally looking for an unfurnished place (have too much furniture of our own as it is) but have seen somewhere that is fully furnished. There aren't many properties on the market that we like and are within our price range and competition for them seems intense - we have already been pipped to the post on another property.

Would it be total madness to consider the storage idea? Would it be unfair to the landlord to do this (my DP thinks that it would be okay because it would limit wear and tear on the furniture)?

Would there be less competition for a furnished house? My view is that most people who don't have their own furniture wouldn't be looking at renting a family home, would be younger people looking at smaller flats. Is this vain hope?

Maybe I am being desperate even considering this and maybe if we hold out somewhere else will come up. Just want to leave though because we are waiting for our current rental to be sold and it's like the place isn't ours anymore. Also TTC so want to feel settled somewhere new.

Sorry long post! Any opinions on this would be appreciated.

Why not just ask the landlord? They may have somewhere to store the things you don't want or may have a huge objection to having their things put into storage - and even if they don't I imagine most would want some say over how/where they are stored.

the storage idea is fine .... but it adds up (cost wise long term) ... i have stuff in storage and the money i have now paid in storage has exceeded the value of the goods in storage (but its in another country so hard to shift!). I would look at options that are cheaper and affordable, and work out how much you would pay over a year, or how long you will rent for and see if that saving is worth it .... do you have a friend with a spare attic/garage etc that you could pay a nominal sum monthly for storage?

ChippingInNeeds up front is probably the best way to go. I'm just a bit worried about looking like a PITA from the word go!

iwantavuvezela unfortunately we can't think of anybody with a garage or the like. Have looked into storage costs and that added to the rent would be within our budget but the dilemma is would we rather have the house or that storage money in our pockets each month. Bearing in mind we would want to stay in the house for a long time maybe we would regret the decision.

I think that I am so hung up on this particular house because it has a basement which would be storage heaven. I guess the question is how much extra money is indulging my tidiness OCD tendencies worth Grin

I'd make it the LL's problem, say that you like the house and blah, blah, blah but you want it unfurnished.

lalalonglegs it's worth a go & I think on reflection that perhaps this would be the sanest course of action.

I've actually calmed down a bit now and have stopped the "I want it, I want it" wailing and have stopped mentally arranging my stuff in said house. I get a bit, ahem, highly strung when it comes to property hunting. Smile
