So what's new in the world of bathrooms?

Moving soon and a new bathroom is going to be the first project.

Existing bathroom has a turquoise suite and the loo is next door to but separate from the main bathroom.

Its a fairly decent size and will need totall re-doing and am happy to move things round.

So is the limestone tiles thing old hat now? I want something thats fairly classic I guess and won't date too quickly.

So any lovely links/ideas for me please?

Can you try and open the two rooms up so the loo is in the bathroom? This will update it instantly.

I think beige is a bit dated now, but I like quite classic style, ie metroy tiles, 1930s basins, wood floor etc, so not everyones cup of tea.

Plan your layout first then think about the finishes once you know what you are doing.

Is it your main/family bathroom?

traceybath · 24/02/2011 12:57

Thanks Pannacotta.

Yes will definitely knock through the wall and it is the main family bathroom.

I tike the 1930's style too but as have 3 smallish children would worry about splashing with wooden floors.

For a family bathroom I think making it practical is the most important thing.
I am planning ours and am thinking large, matt tiles, lino floor, easy to clean fittings such as wall hung loo/basin, thermostatic shower etc etc.

Do you have any fancy bathroom showrooms near you? They are good places to look for ideas/inspiration.

Mirage · 24/02/2011 22:45

We have a similar set up-toilet next to bathroom.I was all set to knock it through until dh pointed out that with 2 dds hogging the only bathroom in the future,he'd never be able to use the loo.So we have kept it seperate.

I think limestone is a bit dated now and have gone for rectangular bumpy white tiles, grey vinyl floor and woodwork painted in F&B Calluna, which is a dove grey, with the walls painted in Brassica [a slate grey/lavender].It is still being worked on,but looks great already.

Ripeberry · 24/02/2011 22:50

We are having our bathroom totally gutted next week and we are having ripple plain white tiles on the walls (half-way), the rest will be painted with a blue colour (not sure yet).
But the white tiles will be topped off with a border of glass mosaic tiles(blue/gree/clear)
We will then have a block of glass mosaic near the shower (over bath).
White tiled floor and new toilet, basin and bath.
The old suite has been in there since the 1960's and it is horrendous!
Can't wait! Smile

Mirage · 24/02/2011 23:06

Sounds lovely Ripberry. Will you post a picture when it is finished?

Our tiles are white ripple and they look great, really clean and fresh.

Our old suite was primrose yellow 1960's,with poo brown woodwork and fake plastic yellow tiles.I've lived with a crappy bathroom with no heating holey plaster and a draughty window for nearly 6 years now and can't quite believe it has gone for good.As I said to dh tonight, you have to live with a horrid bathroom to really appreciate your new one.

Are you anywhere near a branch of Porcelanosa? They have a great range of v contemporary tiles, not all (but some) expensive. They also have large format tiles which can look great although your Tiler will hate you. Def avoid the limestone look, you're right about it being dated, but if you like that stone look they have some more grey-toned ones which are smart and easy to live with. For fittings Ideal standard have two good contemporary ranges (White and Studio) and if you want a 30s look try Imperial. Don't be tempted by the bathstore trad ranges..nasty IMHO! If there's one place to spend money, it's the brassware -these are the bits you touch everyday so they need to feel good IYSWIM. If you can get a lit mirror over the basin, great. Some of them also have shaver sockets in if you need to plug in an elec toothbrush - have a look at the Astro website for bathroom lighting in general, and for mirrors.

traceybath · 25/02/2011 15:24

Thanks - some good ideas and recommendations.

Will look for a Porcelanosa too.

If the 'bath' in your nickname is your location, there's one next to cribbs causeway!

traceybath · 25/02/2011 16:13

Fresh - I just found that - thanks! Smile

Definitely avoid the limestone look I viewed 30 houses and only 3 didn't have it!

traceybath · 25/02/2011 16:31

Have been perusing various magazines and quite like the white rectangular tiles and sort of 1930's black and white style.

I love this look (am going for a similar style in our en-suite)

Traceybath, have you been to Tile and Flooring centre on London road? They have lots of choice in more trad styles. Can also recommend Bathroom Solutions on Moorland Road for fittings, brassware etc (speak to Olly who is v helpful). Have fun!

traceybath · 25/02/2011 20:29

Oh thanks Fresh.

I bought tiles for our old house from the place on London road and did find them very good and will try the Moorland Road shop too.

Are you local too?

Sorry to hijack this thread but I was going to start a similar one and hate over-production!

I am just starting a big renov project and am now thinking about the bathroom. We will have a family bathroom of about 2.5 x 2.5 with a large window. I am going to have a bath, walk-in shower, loo & sink plus wall storage.

It would be lovely if anyone could help me with links to bathroom porn or retail suggestions.

Really liked the tiles and shower set up pannacotta's link. I love the 'new york' style brick shaped tiles and a clear walk-in shower. So my tastes are quite similar to yours traceybath

What is the 'dated' limestone look btw? Just so I know to avoid. (Suspect it was in my last bathroom but one)

Any ideas for flooring would be good as well. I also want to have plaster walls with wall tiles only round the bath and shower.

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 26/02/2011 11:59

I don't like mosaic tiled flooring either. In principle fine but unless your tiler is anal retentive and has all the time in the world, I find it can be hard to get perfect flatness resulting in endless toe-stubbing.

I also don't like retro / Victoriana - well I do but not right for our home.

I like contemporary (but not TOO dating) or Modern-influenced styles.

Fussy, ain't I?

fresh · 26/02/2011 12:29

Traceybath - yes, 5 miles out of bath.

noddyholder · 26/02/2011 13:28

We have just done ours and I love it.We have a dark grey slate floor and lighter grey brick tiles up to waist height. An old freestanding bath and a walk in cubicle.I bought a huge period style square sink from ebay which I love. The rest of the walls are white and one is completely shelved with different sized boxes and is painted white too.I have a huge mirror above the sink and a small chest of drawers for flannels etc.On the only plain wall I have a huge painting of a handbag (sounds odd but is lovely)I think if you can treat it like a room it really works I would love an armchair in there but ds and his teenage mates are not the best aim when they come in from parties so soft furnishings are out!

Pannacotta · 26/02/2011 14:07

noddy what does your sink look like, can you link?
Am on the lookout for something unusual for our family bathroom.

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 26/02/2011 14:19

Yes noddy - I too would love a link / picture. Sounds gorgeous. The floor sounds similar to what i've chosen for our kitchen.

Sadly I've no room for freestanding bath.

Or have I???

(rushes to get tape measure)

noddyholder · 26/02/2011 15:40

I will try and get a picture!

noddyholder · 26/02/2011 15:47

this but longer and wall mounted with big brackets and a chrome waste.I am going to take some pictures this week and will post.It has the same taps though and they are lovely!

HarderToKidnap · 26/02/2011 15:55

Oh, can I join? We are renovating the bathroom too. So far we have exposed the brick fireplace and are going to paint the brick white. On the floor we are prob having wood-look Amtico. Brickwork and walls will be F&B Wimborne White. We have a huge Henri II mirror we will be putting up above the fireplace prob painted in a dark purplish grey. Not sure what to do about the tiles around the shower and sink - at the moment we are thinking some Travertine lookie likey ceramic tiles but worried they might be too beige for the rest of the room. Quite like the new hessian look tiles.
