Hi

Quick question about carpets, we need to re-carpet the entirety of our house living room, dining room and 3 bedrooms plus stairs and landing. There seem to be many types of carpet available, what is the best type of cheap, hardwearing beige / biscuit carpet in your experience?

I have messy DP and baby on the way so time is short currently rubbish floorboards underneath foot

Also this is our first home - does anyone have any idea about how much said carpet is likely to be??

I work in the family business selling carpets. The best value carpet IMO that we sell is Cormar's Primo Plus. It is a manmade yarn, but 2-ply (which means that it doesn't flatten as easily as single ply carpets). It is decent quality for the money and is treated with a stain protector(fitted for around £18 per sq mt). However, that carpet is hessian-backed, so you will need gripperods and underlay - which all add to the cost.

Another option would be to see what your local carpet shop has in stock (on the roll) in a felt back. That type of carpet can be laid without gripperods straight on to the sub-floor. You could probably get a decent quality one fitted for about £12-14 sq mt. Not as comfortable or as long lasting as Primo or other higher priced carpets, but would do the job fr a couple of years. We only stock carpets that are beige/biscuit coloured as that is what most customers want.

I was in the same situation just before DD was born about 20 months ago. I cannot say how much I regret replacing the carpets rather than getting some sort of easily cleaned hard surface, whether lino, wood or vinyl or whatever put down. 20 months later, the carpets in each room have stains that are impossible to get rid of. Whatever carpet sellers say, some stains just DONT come out. It is really depressing and was such a waste of money.

If you replace some of your carpets with a hard surface of some kind or get your floorboards replaced, I can guarantee that it will make your life easier. You can always put a cheap rug down and throw it away if it gets stained.
