repairing damaged plaster - help, it's cracking as it's drying!

We have had an area of wall in our kitchen that was damaged thanks to a damp patch when we moved in years ago. We had the damp (kind of) sorted, and have only got round to redecorating and fixed up the damage now!

I bought some readymix plaster and scraped all the old damaged stuff off, and thought I did a great job and putting the new plaster on. But seems I put it on too thick as it's developed big cracks as it's dried. It's fine where it's thinner. I know now that I should have done a few layers of thin stuff and let each layer dry in between but it didn't say that on the tub, and I didn't research it enough first obviously.

Now, I'm not HUGELY bothered what it looks like when we've finished painting as it's down in a corner behind where our bin goes and it really was in an awful state before, so not looking for perfection, just a quick patch up really so that it's better than before. I was wondering if I could put another thin layer over the cracked bits to kind of hold it in place and then paint over it all when properly dry, or will I have to get it all off and start again?

You can get fine finishing plaster that you can put over the top and sand off, think it's made by polyfilla and is dead easy to use.

I think that's probably the kind of stuff I'm using. You reckon it'll be ok to just put it over the cracked stuff then?

Is the stuff you're using white with a texture like icing sugar when sanded?

Not really white. It's just B&Qs own ready mix plaster in a little pot. I'm just going to put a thin layer over the cracked bits! Half expecting to have to do it again properly in 6 months time but hey ho, it'll do for now...
