Anyone painted over their existing wallpaper?

Thinking of doing this but the wallpaper is slightly embossed and has coloured pattern so not sure if it'll work or what paint to use. Anyone tried this with success and if so, any tips?

Thanks.

Have never tried this myself but my daughter's room has an embossed wallpaper that has been painted over. Looks fine but not sure what colour it was originally.

We've painted over ours and it looks fine. The wall paper had a cream background and a light green fleur de lys colour on top. We used a lemon coloured paint and it has worked out fine, no pattern showing through. Needed 2 coats of paint but that is normal anyway. When we redecorate we will just paint over again. Make sure the wallpaper is undamaged and stuck down.

yep, painted ours. It's been fab. About to re-do to smarten up. (and the dc have done their own bit of 'decorating' on top but best not to talk about that) They were various colours in the first place, when we moved in we simply didn't have the time and money to redo all the bedrooms and hall/stairs/landing, so painted the lot, aminly in decent quality shade-of-whiteboring colours, but they came up really nice.

'aminly' = 'mainly' + Wine
Blush

Yes, just do a couple of coats. Normal emulsion will be fine.

If the paper comes away at all, you can use a syringe of PVA glue through the bubble to stick it back. :)

Yes, but mine wasn't embossed. It needed priming with an oil based primer, and when the top coat went on the pattern didn't show through at all.

Thanks everyone. There's a random slightly raised pattern on it so unfortunately, I think that's still going to be evident (just tested a patch behind the settee!)but at least it'll freshen it up. :)

I've done it lots of times. I recommend using an undercoat, it means more work, but gives a much better result in the end.
