Boiler quote - tell me if this sounds reasonable!

Have just had a quote from a heating engineer to:

strip out old boiler, power flush existing system, change radiator valves, install new boiler (included in price) and new unvented hot cylinder, run a new main (a few metres) to the stop cock in the road.

It's £9,200. Which made me go quite pale. But then I know nothing about these things.

Property experts, does that sound reasonable?

Shock That sounds like a hell of a lot but I'm no expert. Can you get a few more quotes to compare?

lucykate · 03/02/2011 13:05

jeez, sounds expensive to me. get 3 quotes if you can, you need something to compare it too.

ImFab · 03/02/2011 13:06

That sounds way too much.

We paid £3300 for removal of one boiler and replacing it with a new one. British Gas wanted to charge nearly double that, half was the boiler and half was for fitting. We went with a local firm (crap service but decent boiler).

bitzermaloney · 03/02/2011 13:07

I need to don't I? Only thing is, this is the chap who always works with our builder (who is doing an extension for us), and I want to avoid putting noses out of joint. On the other hand.... it's 9000 quid! We had budgeted for half that!

We paid less than £2000 for that about 5 years ago. In London. Yes, more quotes needed, and ask for a detailed breakdown of costings.

KnowNothing · 03/02/2011 13:12

We had a new boiler a couple of years ago. To remove old one, flush system and install new one I'm sure was around £2k. Whereabouts are you? I'm sure someone on here could recommend a few others to try.

If you feel awkward and can't just talk to him easily, tell him you are shopping around as its a force of habit from your job/your dad drummed it into you/your aunty is paying and wants three quotes/your friends kirsty and phil told you to.

BlingLoving · 03/02/2011 13:15

No no, that's way too expensive.

HattiFattner · 03/02/2011 13:15

I got everything on your list up to "and new unvented hot cylinder, run a new main (a few metres) to the stop cock in the road." - for £2300. I live in SUrrey, so contractors not cheap.

A new unvented cylinder will cost about £700 plus install....say £1200. And new mains will be another couple of hundred - but say £600 ish. So add a couple of grand - you should be ableto get all this done for under £5k IMHO.

Recommend you try Checkatrade and get several quotes. Our next nearest quote was £4500, so we saved £2k instantly.
The guys we have used from this site have been excellent and good value for money.

ImFab · 03/02/2011 13:17

Stop all thoughts about noses out of joint. It is your choice who you get to do the work.

Loopynoo · 03/02/2011 13:18

We had ours done last month.

Luckily my uncle fitted it for us. He would normally have charged around £3K for the one he fitted for us as it was of a good standard, he also did most of what you mention in your OP.

£9K?! He is havin a larf.

noddyholder · 03/02/2011 13:20

That is way too much.4k max

bitzermaloney · 03/02/2011 13:20

Thanks. I've just asked for a detailed breakdown. The hot water cylinder would be a Megaflow (which I know are expensive, and he has to get a new pipe up to the road... But still...

Cross-posted -
We are in Kent, near Orpington. Any recommendations very gratefully received! (And I will look at checkatrade).

Grrr. He seemed so nice and genuine! I must look like Ms Moneybags or something Hmm

we had our boiler replaced last month, it cost 2,400 or so, including replacing the gas pipes

no idea what the hot water cylinder bit should cost mind you

we are in SE London

can't remember who did the work but could find out when I get home

maybe if you get another quote you could go back to this chap and give him a chance to match it?

bitzermaloney · 03/02/2011 13:30

I will do.

You lot are great, as always.

We paid #5k for the same job 4 years ago but that also included plumbing in a new bathroom, putting in plumbing for utility room and moving plumbing for the kitchen to another room. I'm in SW London.

yomellamoHelly · 03/02/2011 18:07

Way too much.
We had old boiler removed plus two old tanks in roof removed (had to be cut into pieces), new water main through house, new Vaillant boiler with all connecting pipework buried in walls and electrical and gas connections rerun and a megaflow cylinder, new radiator valves and power flush for £3,300. Was told new main from street to our stopcock would be about an extra £500.
We're in Surrey. Work was done this summer.

CatIsSleepy · 04/02/2011 14:46

right just remembered i said i was going to look up the lot that did our boiler as we're not too far from you
