Plumbers - would you tile first then fit cloakroom suite or fit then tile floor walls?

I have this ongoing argument with my DH, we have a downstairs toilet and sink we want to fit.

I want full wall tiles and floor tiles.

Do we get this done first then fit suite or the other way round?

Please help stop this domestic! Smile

A plumber will lay pipes, then it is tiled, then the fittings go in.

We DIYed.

Pipes.

Suite (to make sure it all fitted ok and to get an idea of what to do next - then removed it).

Floor tiles.

Tiles.

Suite back in again.

We did this cos we didn't really know what we were doing.

It worked ok - really pleased with result. That was 7 years ago and we have since moved but I was back there last week (we sold to someone we knew) and it's still all up and working and looking fine.

What lala said. You need to get the suite before you do anything, so that the plumber can get the pipes in exactly the right position, but not fix the suite in. They call this 'first fix'. Then you tile, obviously avoiding the pipes, then plumber connects everything up (second fix). If you're doing it all yourself, remember that if you're tiling the floor, the loo/basin will stand on the tiles so will be higher than if they were just standing on the floor - I.e. At first fix make sure you take account of the thickness of the tiles when positioning pipes.
