Sash Window - OK for kids' rooms?

NonnoMum · 30/01/2011 22:00

The windows in both children's rooms need replacing. They are horrible aluminium early double glazing.

Our house is an Edwardian semi and the shape of the windows looks like they were originally sash. We are gradually doing the house up and would hope to reinstate sash windows especially at the front of the house.

Are sash windows suitable for children's rooms? They seem to open really deeply (?). And any idea how much two windows might cost (they are just straightforward rectangles, not boxed or anything)?

TIA

absolutely suitable - many houses have original ones. Not sure what you mean by open deeply - do you mean the bottom part slides up a long way leaving a big opening? You can get adjustable window locks put on - they screw into the wood just above where the bottom part starts. ours either keep the sash shut entirely (holidays etc) or allow an opening of 5-6 inches in summer, so there is no worry there. Can't help with cost though sorry.

Thanks missfairlie. That's excatly what I mean about opening. Don't want them being able to climb out. In my girls' room the bed is right next to the window and the window is practically on a level with the mattress. (Deep window opening rather than high bed!)

just lock bottom sash and open top one in hot weather

We got one reinstated and it cost around £1000 for draughtproofed hardwood sashes. DS has one in his room. They put toughened glass in the lower sash and fitted restrictors, so the window only opens about 5 inches unless I remove those. We used Ventrolla, if that's any help.

I had about 15 put in, hardwood sashes, new box frames on some (a few had the originals that were still good to use), all double-glazed and it was about #8500. The frames were primed but not painted.

I long for sash windows - they are the best for ventilation, with the bottom opened a bit to let cooler air in, & the top opened a bit to let warmer air out.

Ideal for children, as long as there is a stop on both parts Smile

I have sash windows. I keep the windows in the childrens rooms locked, as they are too high up to risk anyone going out of them.

Our windows were around £1000 each for hardwood.

We have some original sash windows and just lock the bottom one and put a nail in the frame at the top so it restricts how far the window can open. I think they're perfect for kids' rooms.

Thanks for your replies everyone.

Silly question - are the hardwood ones double-glazed, or is this impossible with sash windows?

And a grand a time?? Gulp. Need a second job...

lala can I ask who you used and would you recommend them? Thanks :)

We had double glazed sash windows put in last year. They were softwood windows with hardwood window sills. And yes, I'm afraid they were about 1k each.
