painting to give illusion ceiling is higher

I have a bedroom with quite low ceilings. The walls are an egg shell blue and the ceiling a warm white. If I brought the ceiling colour down to form a border along the top of the walls, say for about 12", would that give the illusion that the ceilings are higher? Or have I completely got the wrong end of the stick? I'm sure I read something about this somewhere. I can't face a completely white-ish room.

I don't think it would work, might just emphasise their lowness if there is some sort of demarcation at eye level. Bigger windows would make a room look bigger and airier but that is quite a job.

The house we have just bought has the decor you describe, clanger. I really like it. The house is Edwardian and has very high ceilings anyway though, so whether the paint has anything to do with them looking so high I can't really say Grin

I think the best way to make a room look lighter (and higher) is to add some mirrors. On the walls at 90 degree angles to the window.

And lighting too. Floor lamps that face up.

Clouds.

I don't think they would help Mama Confused. I think they would make the room seem even smaller....

Yes even nice fluffy ones

Like the 90 degree angle mirror idea though

With the Edwardian house does the demarcation happen where there might have been a dado rail?

Yes, it would clanger, normally from the picture rail up.
