Noise from renovations

The house next to ours is being renovated at the moment(it's a terrace) and not before time, there is no bathroom and the place was in a very poor state.

So far the work has been going on for only a few weeks, but the hours seem to be getting longer as time goes on and now it seems they are working from about 8 during the week and 9-10 at the weekends finishing about 4-4.30 in the afternoon.

Now I appreciate they have a lot of work to do and despite the fact I find it a bit difficult to study with all the noise I haven't really objected to it.

However yesterday they said that they'll be working until 10 at night when the nights get lighter! Initially I assumed they were joking but on reflection I think not.

What can I do? Surely I can't be expected to put up with this noise from 8 in the morning until 10 at night for weeks on end- I could cry.

Does anyone have any experience in dealing with this sort of thing?

Sorry so long

I haven't had experience with neighbours renovations but have with my own. All I can say is that the work at the beginning tends to be noisy as it's usually knocking down walls and stripping the place out. As the work progresses there should be less noise as electrics, plastering and decorating are quieter.

It will all depend on your local council. I would give planning permission a call for info on home renovations.

In the city centre here in Manchester, I was having to deal with loads of construction noise. I was told that they could start at 7 AM on weekdays, and 8 AM on Saturday. They weren't meant to do any on Sundays. And work was always meant to stop at 6 PM in the week, and a bit earlier than that on Saturdays. However this was commercial construction. It was a major problem for me though, so I sympathise - we were regularly woken up by industrial water blasting to clean old stone buildings at 8 AM on Sundays! It was a total nightmare.

Have you told them the noise is bothering you? Probably best to arm yourself with the facts from the council in terms of hours of work, and try to have a friendly chat as well.

As the previous poster mentioned, the work should get quieter once the heavy stuff is done, so perhaps you could also ask them to reassure you that by working til 10 PM, they mean things like painting etc.
