Vinyl Flooring - Naff??

Rainydaze · 09/01/2011 21:34

We need to replace the carpet in a bathroom and the kithen floor tiles are old and chipped.

I thought vinyl seemed like a good (cheap!), practical solution, but my friend said it's really naff. Is he right?

Thank you! :)

For my money, Dalsouple rubber flooring is fantastic: its pretty easy to put down (according to a friend who used it), and really does take industrial quantities of poo and baby vomit (again according to the friend who had the misfortune to test this), amongst other things. Its luuuverly to walk on, and it didn't look remotely naff (though I think it depends what the rest of the room looks like). www.dalsouple.com/Domestic-Indoor.php

We currently have a slate floor in our large kitchen/living room, and though it looks lovely, everything smashes to smithereens if it falls on it (we live in terror of toddling nephew doing the smithereen thing to his head), and its c-o-l-d to walk on. We used to a 'no shoes in the house' household, but this is rapidly being reconsidered.

Amtico, karndean and marmoleum are all really good looking, comfortable and practical. I hate the clattery nature of real tiles and slate.

granddesign · 11/01/2011 18:38

I think vinyl is a good cheap, flooring solution but the minute you start talking Amtico I start screaming naff!

CointreauVersial · 12/01/2011 13:27

Noddy, you have a point - I also can't bear vinyl that is trying to look like something else (wood, tiles etc), but if you shop around there are some decent designs out there.

I agree you get what you pay for quality-wise!

We are about to put it down in the kids bathroom. We will be renovating it in a couple of years time, so no point in going for tiles; vinyl will do nicely.

Hi. we just replaced ours with vinyl flooring and I'm really pleased with it. We got it in a really modern pale grey that def doesn't look naf. Looks easily as classy as rubber and way better than laminate which I personally think looks nasty. Vinyl's not pretending to be anything it isn't. And we wanted a modern finish. Plus it's dead easy to lay and cleans up really well. We wanted vinyl as a sheet, not tiles and found it at www.colourflooring.co.uk. Also they do other really good colours like red, white, lemon and a cool blue we almost went for.

I am not a fan of vinyl flooring, but I am afraid I will have to consider using one. We have old floorboards in our kitchen/diner, which are soft wood, old, wearing, draughty and unlevel. In order to do proper flooring, we would have to take out kitchen units (still good) and replace floorboards, which is a huge job. Hence the "naff" vinyl option!
Can someone recommnend realistically looking slate tile type vinyl? (dark grey large tile style?)

How about this stuff...coloured vinyl

ginmakesitallok · 05/02/2011 14:49

we had vinyl flooring in our last house in Kitchen and dining room. It wasn't cheap! We had a wood effect one - and lots of people complimented us on our wooden floor in kitchen - it was great! We've got kardean in current kitchen - very hardwearing but difficult to keep clean! Think our vinyl was aguastep or something?

KarenG · 08/02/2011 20:24

I got a lovely vinyl made by Forbo Nairn (the marmoleum people), a sort of greyish cream with a sort of mottled granite effect (it's not smooth though) and little aqua sparkles in it. It's class. I originally wanted marmoleum (had this in previous bathroom) but no fitters were available at the time as it was the school summer hols and they were all busy doing schools.

We have wooden floor boards in hall so can vinyl flooring leading from there into the kitchen ever look right? The floor is too high for engineered wood.

NewHouseNewMe · 15/11/2020 09:54

Karndean and Amtico are more expensive than engineered wood and vastly more expensive than laminate!

It's super hard wearing but must be laid perfectly on a well prepared floor.

We've a tile effect Armstrong Rhinofloor, laid well over 20 years ago, still looks really good and if I wash and buff it a bit it looks like new. Even last year had someone say 'Oh I like your new floor tiles' I think the tiles effect are coming back into fashion

Roselilly36 · 18/11/2020 19:17

I like vinyl, practical, easy to keep clean. I absolutely hate laminate.

Chocolatedeficitdisorder · 18/11/2020 19:23

We changed our naff laminate in the hall and study last year for good quality vinyl. It's easier to clean, the dogs are safer on it and it's much less noisy. We also have vinyl in the kitchen for the same reasons, especially as crockery and glasses have a chance if they fall.

Tiles are my last choice in a home - never comfortable. Laminate is naff, wood is expensive and easily marked (we have it in our lounge) and carpet isn't hygienic with pets.

Chumleymouse · 18/11/2020 19:39

Put vinyl in our new shower room , the concrete under it was freezing . We went for the cushion stuff and it's very warm underfoot

I'm not keen on tiles on bathroom floors ( too slippy )

Thanks for all the positive feedback on vinyl tiles, we have decided to go ahead with them. There are so many out there it’s a minefield but the good quality ones do look great.
