I know it's ridiculously expensive but if we are spending 10k converting a room we should do it properly shouldn't we ?

I had a meter moved before at my old house & it was an awful pita so reluctant to do it again but dh thinks we should

You can call any of the gas suppliers and they will be able to send someone out if they cover your area but you can also get some Gas Safe installers to do the work for you which will probably cost a fraction of the price (didn't find out about this until I had spent horrendous amounts having my own meter moved Angry>

Your gas supplier can move it a very short distance along the same wall but any further than that and you have to get National Grid involved.

The plumber can reconnect the supply once the box is moved but I don't think they can actually move the box (certainly none of the 3 installers I called would even contemplate it)

You're right its a complete PITA though.
the online form asks you questions you can't possibly know the answer to
It costs £££
It takes about 6 weeks for them to do it and when they do turn up they refuse to do it because there is scaffolding about a mile away from were they are working (OK a slight exageration but I am still Angry 6 months later.

I'm still Angry from 2004 when I had it done last time Blush I got a partial refund they were that bad.

Call your supplier, they will call National Grid. You need the unique meter reference number and permission to do it.

Someone removed the meter in our house without authorisation and it caused huge amounts of trouble. The previous supplier kept sending bills for a non existent meter and National Grid had to come and physically verify it no longer existed.

I got a partial refund too as it was so outrageously expensive, you have to pay upfront and when the men came it took them less than an hour. Grin

Is it the same hassle for an electricity meter>

Roughly how many £££ are we talking?

Mine cost £1200 but they reduced it to £750 after a lot of complaining.

Think ours was £600 to move from inside to outside (of same wall) + 1/2m of new pipe. Hellishly expensive!
