Putting a fire where there isn't one.

Ok, bear with me while I describe our new lounge and help me work out what to do with it.

It's rectangular and length about double the width.

2 bay windows on long south side. The chimney breast is in the middle of the long north side but RIGHT next to the door into the room. There is a fireplace but currently no fire.

There is a radiator on the west and east sides (the short ones).

My questions,

Will I ever get used to the fire being next to the door?

Can I put a fire on the west wall and will it look naff with no chimney breast?

Assuming pretend fire otherwise you are going to have issues such as a smoke filled room WinkGrin

No chance you can move the door is there? How close are we talking to the door?

fruitstick · 13/12/2010 16:47

No, the only other place the door can go is the side of the fire.

Yes, fake fire. Or maybe just set light to the coffee table Grin

fruit I have no chimney breast and when I get my £10k (long story) I'm planning on building a fake one and having on of those OPTI MYST electric fires that look SOO realistic. Was going to link to video clip but cant find

Cant you get rid of unwanted chimney breast?

GentleOtter · 13/12/2010 16:58

You can create a chimney anywhere if you use the interlocking pumice fire blocks. Hang on until I find a link....

You can also have wood-burning stoves installed that have a metal chimney running either inside or outside the house. We're having ours running inside because it works better for us this way, doesn't take up much space and will also act as a radiator in the room that it passes through, so we get to utilise much more of the heat.

Ooh, great. Where do they have to come out of the house? The sitting room comes forward from the house so the west wall is next to the front door.

Presumably we can't have a chimney out there!

I've bought the most ridiculous house haven't I Confused

Can you put the fire in the middle of the room? Using those blocks, you can place a chimney in any part of the room.
Lots of stove show rooms have them installed if you wanted to see them in use.
