Suitable areas to live near Sutton, Surrey?

We're currently abroad but will be moving back to UK in March. We were previously based in the East Midlands but DH will have a new job and will need to go into his Head Office daily which is in Sutton, Surrey.

I don't know that area of the country at all. Would really appreciate some advice on what areas to start looking at for a rented property.

Ideally I would like something...

  1. semi-rural, i.e a small town or large village that does have amenities, atleast a few shops/pub etc. Have done very rural before and it just doesn't suit me.
  2. 30-40 minute each way commute for DH
  3. We don't have to worry about schools yet.
  4. If it helps identify areas that would be suitable, my budget for a rented, unfurnished house will be about £2k pcm and I'd like atleast a 3 bed house for that.

TIA!

Cheam is a nice area if you want to be in London.
If you want somewhere more rural but not a village Dorking might suit - medium size town with a direct train service to Sutton.

Have a look at the website www.findaproperty.com for a look at what you can get for that budget. For £2000 you should be able to pick and choose the areas you prefer. Good luck!!

I'd recommend Carshalton, which I think is lovely, and right next to Sutton. Also I would second Dorking.

Wimbledon is just the bees' knees if you can afford it! And there is a much overlooked area between Wimbledon and Morden called Merton Park which is lovely. Can't remember if Sutton is on the tramline, but much of the area is served by tram.

Schools FWIW are really good in the area, so you are definitely in luck.

South Sutton is perfect & good catchment area for schools.
I know I live here & my son is doing his A' levels
