Very very exciting. We reckon that it is finally about time to replace our 20 year old (at least!) kitchen and we are seeing a local company later this week to talk about designs and colours and what we want. The kitchen needs completely gutting - with saggy bobbly ceilings and very dodgy bobbly walls and tiles.

it is a rather small space with 3 doors (2 internal, one external) gets loads of light though so the actual cupboard layout we will leave to more expert hands.

I really would like light blue cabinets - that kind of shaker blue you get. What colour worktop? dh says it should be dark like a black granite. I'm not sure?? I like that look very much but would it be too dark for a small kitchen?

Then the floor? I'd like a pale wood effect look, but in a warm non scratch prone surface. I'd also love underfloor heating but can that go on a suspended wooden floor?

Tiles for the walls???? paint colour on non-tiled walls? at that point I'm completely lost.

As for kitchen appliances - clueless! would like a built in fridge freezer I think - but are sepearate untis more efficient and where should I put a built in microwave - can I get a double oven that goes under the worksurface where the top oven is actually a grill/microwave?

so many questions - so clueless!!!

We won a kitchen on ebay last night for £7.

It's this colour which is what we wanted. I prefer it with a beech worksurface though which is what we're having. Also won a job lot of 'honey' coloured tiles for £8. That's the kitchen done then.

But thought you'd like the colour maybe?

Exciting isn't it?

showaddywaddy!!!!!!!!

tell me more..... how do you know the kitchen will fit? is that a dumb question?

i desperately need a new kitchen but can't afford it, but i have some strange needs..... do you think ebay may be my answer????

what if it has been altered already to fit wonky walls???

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/11/2010 19:15

wow!!! well done!!! :) I do like the colour very much - but can't make up my mind if I'd prefer beech or the dark granite type stuff.

sorry OP! totally hijacked there Blush

i think i would go for a grey/black worktop with pale blue units

i think underfloor heating would work

tiles i might do white with some pale and slightly darker blue interspersed. or in a strip around?

Showaddywaddy · 15/11/2010 19:19

I have all the measurements (they were in the listing), we're taking our kitchen out entirely and know that it will fit the space with minimal jiggery pokery. Anything that needs altering/cutting/sanding/planing I can manage easily.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/11/2010 19:21

I like the idea of the interspersed tiles - thats a good idea. can't believe we can finally do this :) We moved in before dd was born (she is almost 11) and we said then that it was the first thing we would do.....

ahh you must be very excited!
ours needs doing desperately, we've been here 4 years and like you it was top of our "to do" list lol

it's so bloody expensive tho isn't it, esp if you need to get someone to fit it for you

sounds like we need to hire showaddywaddy! lol

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/11/2010 19:28

it is bloody expensive - scary stuff. So Showaddywaddy - are you for hire?

I take payment in gingerbread and earl grey.

We've just bought our first house (completed a fortnight ago) and we're doing stuff before we move in (we've got only about 10 days left). So far we've removed a fireplace, insulated the loft, taken out a wall, re-plastered some stuff, decorated two rooms, hung two new doors, removed a radiator and fixed the lean-to roof.

It's amazing what having no budget will do to you.

Bathroom and kitchen next.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/11/2010 19:51

very impressive!!!! you are going to be exhausted - our no budget approach was to just not bother and to bodge where essential. It ermmm, shows...... feel astonishgly fortunate to be able to do this now.

oybbk that sounds like our no budget plan too! sadly, tho he tries, dp just isn't great at DIY

my dad on the other hand is. but he takes eons to do anything

thisisyesterday · 16/11/2010 18:52

i do however make some mean gingerbread and a nice cup of earl grey... think we're onto a winner here!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/11/2010 19:41

oh excellent! 15 minute updates on the weather maybe?

we went to a big show room place today to have a wander round. Staff were great and left us to it, so we could walk about with bits of granite in our hands and hold them up to blue cabinets. We decided that back would be too much but found a lovely soft grey with sparkly bits in it. Also decided that if we can, a built in double oven would be much easier than our current set up of having to crouch down to get food in and out.

Tiles - I think if we can get samples of the cupboard and worksurface colouring then we can wander about a tile shop with them.

Also decided we need a wine rack.....

I think a wooden worktop would work with pale blue colours, ideally oak. Grey tiles.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/11/2010 22:22

That does sound nice! would it be hard to look after?

OP posts:
cece · 16/11/2010 22:26

I have a walnut worktop and find it easy to look after. Just oil it occasionally. No more difficult than putting some oil onto a cloth and rubbing it in.

I think Oak would look nice with what you are planning.

lalalonglegs · 16/11/2010 22:33

You have to be a bit careful round the taps but, as cece says, regular oiling works wonders.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/11/2010 12:52

I am very tempted :) I love natural materials. Will see what kitchen chappy says tomorrow.
