Lighting system not earthed

So......we had a great electrician in to do an unrelated Job and he mentioned that in half of the house (the original part) the wiring system was from the 60s and was not earthed. He said it was not a legal requirement but should a wire short or fray and touch ....er I don't know what.....the metal fittings would be live. Fine if the light fittings are plastic or pull cord, but the small screws would be live too.
Has anyone else come across this at all and did you choose to rewire- we were quoted 3-4000k.

I think if the wiring is from the 60s it's probably time to replace it anyway. It's really unlikely that there are enough sockets or that they are in the right place for modern living. It's a shame if you have just redecorated or something but if you are planning to redo anything then I would have it done. I don't know how big your home is but if it's something like a three-bed house, that sounds reasonable.

Yes, I thought the electrician seemed really nice and very honest. We have three beds on the side of then house that needs done. We just hadn't factored that into the work we had to do. Luckily we are okay for sockets! And luckily, we haven't had the ceilings skimmed yet.
