new stairs

we have a 1970s built house which has open plan stairs ie. the ones with no backs. These have been fine for the 11 years we've lived in the house but we now have a six month old so need to sort something out to prevent him falling through the backs once he gets mobile. We can either have the backs blocked fully or have posts but across to narrow the gaps. Ideally i would like a new staircase so we could also get a new bannister as well as the current one is also good for climbing on which we don't want!! I know there is obviously more to it but what kind of figure should i roughly be looking at for new stairs. I just want bog standard wood, nothing fancy

A few hundred (ours for the loft extension was about #700 but that included a turn). The architectural purist in me says keep the 1970s staircase though - it is a feature of the house.

thanks, that doesn't sound too bad. I am perhaps now leaning towards having some bars put across to narrow the gap though, my dad tells me this would comply with modern building regs and would also not block as much light as a closed in staircase
