Paint coverage

Can anyone help? I am estimating how many pots of paint I need for our hall, stairs and landing. Each pot gives a coverage of 42.5m squared according to manufacturer. I assume this means each pot will contain enough to give one layer's worth of coverage to 42.5m squared.

How do I know if the walls will need one layer, or two? Or more than two?! Confused I am painting cream on top of white, if that is relevant.

Thanks very much in advance.

With light colours, two coats should be enough - generally brighter/darker/deeper need more than that.

Also depends on make of paint - I found Crown paint needs more coats. Just painted pale green on top of cream and am on my 3rd coat!

Whatever you do, make SURE you sugar soap the walls, that makes them as even as possible in terms of absorption rate.

You don't want to paint a slightly dusty/ greasy or damp wall as it will affect how much paint you use and the end result you achieve.
