My toilet won't stop flushing - how do I fix it?

My toilet won't stop flushing and having spent most of the last hour with my hand in the cistern I will now admit I have no idea why, or how to fix it. Any idea anyone?

It's done this a few times before, but a flush and a jiggle of he lid has fixed it - no joy this time though.

It's one of those with 2 flush buttons, and inside it's not a simple ballcock - there's all kinds of bits and bobs doing stuff ConfusedConfused.

Help!

Ditto in ours.

We've got a plastic thing in the middle that gets pushed up by some mechanism when you push the flush button.

This lets the water out. You need to push this plasticy bit back down into place to block the hole where the water comes out.

This will mean that the cistern can fill back up again, and when it's full it'll stop as normal.

Annoying though, isn't it?!

Good luck.

Thanks JLG. Tried that - no joy. Think we need to buy a new part Sad

Ours does this sometimes. i find pressing the flush button slightly corrects it

MrsKitty · 04/11/2010 20:08

Thanks Cyb - That's what has always sorted it in the past, but unfortunately this time it would appear to be well & truly fucked. Never mind, eh, will just have to put up with my FIL for several hours tomorrow whilst he fiddles about with it before admitting that we actually need someone who knows what they're doing... Hmm

you just need a new syphon (the thingy under the flush button)..There's a valve in them that eventually fails. you could try turning off the water to the cistern, taking it out (it just unscrews) and fiddling with it, but tbh you're probably as well off getting a new part. It's not a big job, honest!

Night lark could be right cos we had the same problem with constant flushing. I agree that replacing the syphon is easy. Ww did it 2 years ago and haven't had a problem since.

Thanks everyone,

FIL here for 5 hours yesterday with no results Hmm. Did fit an isolator switch so that we can turn off the water though.

Will suggest the syphon.

Ooh we get this every now and again correctable by holding the flush down for a few seconds. Might buy a new syphon in advance so we don;t have to go out specially when it fails. Are they all standard size? B&Q/Homebase sell them?
OP, hope you get sorted soon, at least you're not wasting water any more.

Put a small stone (weight) in the cistern flush pipe to push it down. This little trick will do the job. No need to replace any parts or call plumber.

I'm guessing the OP appreciates your advice after 8 years of water wasted!
