How to make a house smell great for viewings

Okay what are your best tips to make your house smell good for viewings. Fresh flowers and coffee easy to do. I think baking bread is a cliche although do have bread baking machine.

I'm concerned about my DS's room as he is still in nappies and has a D&V bug and there are viewings over the next few days. How do I eradicate the vile smell!

I always used the clean cotton Yankee candles when we had viewings. One upstairs and one down stairs.

Fluffypoms · 03/11/2010 20:50

Yes i second candles.

SecretNutellaFix · 03/11/2010 20:53

vanilla.

Weirdly I also had a clean cotton one burning when I showed the person I exchanged with around my house. It worked too Grin.

If not then the usual essential oil dripped on cotton and put behind rads, wiped on bulbs etc.

I wouldn't do either in DS room, an open bowl of baking soda should help wihout using nything. Without stating the obvous - open the windows.

baking soda with lavender oil sprinkled on the carpet- leave for 10, then vacuum up.

I don't really like strong perfume smells and, tbh, if a house has one when I go in, I assume it is trying to mask something else. A hint of furniture polish or something would do it for me - suggests that the person takes pride in their home.

We have a plug in freshener by the cat's food bowls. I never thought I'd buy another one 10 years ago, but they have come on a lot and the better ones have a volume control type thing so you can have a lesser scent if required. I have just boought a spiced apple and pine cones one for Christmas

If its around Christmas, then White Company have a delicious Christmas room scent. I also have a lovely Vanilla room scent from L'Occitane.

Do you bake? Nothing really beats the smell of a cake. Grin

Reed infusers are great. Sainsbury's do a vanilla one for £8 that smells good for about a month

jalopy · 05/11/2010 11:57

If you're still viewing by Christmas, oranges with a generous amount of cloves stuck in them and placed in the oven on very low heat. Lovely.

Well I didn't have time to implement any of your wonderful suggestions. The house smelt of poo IMO as DS did two shortly before a viewing. However, they put in a great offer but they have a 1 and 3 year old so probably they didn't notice!

The poo must have made them feel instantly at home!Grin

On a slight tanget

If not then the usual essential oil dripped on cotton and put behind rads, wiped on bulbs etc.

Whop knew??????? Or am I just sloppy? Can't wait to get some and try it.

Spinaroo · 05/11/2010 14:03

Sorry- who knew?

Am amazed by this- and, as the mother of a son, I am also off to hunt for the baking soda !
