Anyone had a prepayment meter removed?

We're moving house on Monday (gulp) and went to measure for curtains etc today.

The electricity was off (it's empty) and on investigating, we discovered it's got a card meter which seemed to be registering a debt of £75...?

Is this possible? Can we get the debt cleared and the electricity on for when we move in? I've never had a card meter so I don't know how they work.

we had the same, contact the electricity advice line people (MPAN information line???) they will tell you who the supplier is, then you need to phone the supplier who will re-jig the meter to clear the debt and send you a new key. Unfortunatly you will have to live with the card meter for a short while, but it can be done easily- swalec were the suppliers here, we have transfered over to Eon (previous suppliers in old house) who are replacing the meter for free. some suppliers will be arsey about changing them or want to charge you- but search around if you come across problems.

we did it too, and the debt was passed over to the previous owner. No cost to change it over. Had to use cards for a couple of weeks after we moved in though. PITA

oh thank you - that's brilliant. Had better start phoning around and work out who owns the meter.
