Daft Question About Home Contents Insurance

JandLandG · 03/11/2010 12:19

Sorry for being a bit dim, but we recently broke our old(ish) telly whilst moving things around.

It cost about £250 a few years ago.

If I claim for this accidental damage on my contents insurance will that affect next year's premium? Does it work like car insurance where it'll go up quite a bit if we claim?

Just checking to see if it's worthwhile or if we should just not bother.

Any thoughts/experience?

Many thanks

It depends on your insurance company. I have a no claims bonus, if I claim then it reduces the discount.

Our insurance would be affected.

Call them and ask.

My brother is forever claiming for anything that goes wrong in his house and said it's not that much more. But he is quite wealthy so prob wouldn't notice or worry as much as me.

You may have an excess to pay. I know ours is £250 so it wouldn't be worth it in our case. Check your policy to see what yours is.

(Sorry if you've already done this - it was just my first thought that came to mind).

If you phone and ask, they can treat that as an incident even if you don't claim.

DaisySteiner · 03/11/2010 12:32

By the time you've paid the excess, I would be really surprised if it's worth claiming for a telly that cost 250 pounds a few years ago - would probably only cost 150 to replace now. I would phone and ask, generally, what your excess is, whether your premium would go up if you make a claim etc etc. As somebody else said, just mentioning that you've had an 'incident' can affect your NCB in theory.

JandLandG · 03/11/2010 20:55

Aaah, so you have an NCB on home insurance then?

Have never previously claimed - in fact haven't really consistently had any contents insurance due to lack of organisation - but will look into it.

Many thanks for your help, all.
