Ok, tell me the worst. Anyone with any experience of this (to my mind) horror. Should I get a structural engineer in and inform our insurance co or...simply have the crack plastered over???

The TV program "Help! My house is falling down" advises that only the crack that can be seen inside and outside can be structural... can you check it?

Thanks for the tip homelyperson. Can't see any external cracks. Just this crack across the living room ceiling which is now making its merry way across adjacent hall way. The crack width is less then 1mm. Maybe this is just what Victorian houses do??

my surveyor friend said only worry about it when you can put your fingers between it!

noddyholder · 02/11/2010 08:45

Have you down any work above it?Or had any windows fitted? Some structural cracks and movement are only inside.Does the window frame look square? Most cracks are historic and fairly harmless

noddyholder · 02/11/2010 08:45

done not down!

oldenoughtowearpurple · 02/11/2010 08:50

Is it new? The crack? Is it getting bigger? Paste something over a bit of it eg a strip of paper and if that splits it may still be moving, in which case i would be tempted to seek advice.

It is also worth looking closely to see if it has been filled in the past.Agree re tape splitting if it is still moving.

Thanks HerHonesty I like your Surveyor friends laid back style.

noddyholder we haven't had any work done above it. It's an original Victorian sash window. The crack has def been filled in the past by the previous owners.

Thanks oldenoughtowearpurple I will try the strip of paper test.

In the mean time (note to self) I must stop staring at the ceiling
