How are your dc's bedrooms decorated/furnished?

My dc's rooms all have painted walls, roller blinds, a bed, a wooden chest of drawers for clothes, a low wooden wardrobe for clothes and toy storage, a rug and a matching bedside cabinet for crap other things. A few pictures and posters. I'm not sure why but to me they look bland and so am looking for ideas to make them more 'homely'. So, how have you decorated your dc's rooms?

BTW ds is 11, dd1 is 8 and dd2 is 5.

We have 2 different colour paints, so two walls in one colour, 2 walls in another, it looks cool.
Bright coloured rugs and Ikea furniture with Ikea night lights...a big bug on his wall next to the bed.

Funky colours do the trick...oh and washable paint on the walls, its magic stuff!

Fairy lights. Dd's have pink flowers and ds has aeroplane line lights.

Both the DC have very eyecatching wallpaper on one wall.

DS(6) has one wall with a giant Captain America panel art wallpaper on, the colours of which include turquoise, so we matched the exact colour and painted his built in wardrobes on the whole of another wall that colour. He has a built in desk and bedside table. Walls are pale blue other than the wallpapered one.

DD(4) has one wall with wallpaper of a photographed flower meadow ( flowers that we grow in the garden here ), a lightshade with grass on to follow the theme, pale pink other walls and waiting for DH to build her cupboards and desk.

We've used big wall stickers (Next and Cargo do some really nice ones) in the nursery.

In oldest DD's room, I've done a mural (white paint on a green wall so nothing garish!) and we've used bunting with lots of different fabrics which is a lovely way to add pattern and colour without doing anything permanent.

Sorry for not replying sooner - haven't been able to get back on the pc til now.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Seems a lot of you rate wallpaper as a good way of livening things up. Trouble is I've got too much on atm and can't be bothered with all the mess.

I like the idea of bunting as it doesn't require plugging in etc like fairy lights (which I love but not in this situation). Trouble is it's not something I can afford to buy new and as I'm in the middle of a couple other crafty projects already I don't want to start another yet (maybe next year though).

Do your dcs have any art on the walls? DD1 would love something like this (she's very girly) but it's quite expensive for a decent size.

I'd love to hear about any other ideas folks may have to add some interest.

I take your point about wallpaper - but it does work out a lot cheaper than the art you're looking at and is essentially the same thing - DD has this over an entire wall - cost £50

Ooh that is so pretty taffeta. That is a lovely site.

I deliberately keep my children's bedroom a bit bland.

Bedrooms are for sleeping in, so they have their beds, a nice big bookshelf (bedtime stories) and their teddies and stuffed toys. Also clothes because sadly we don't live in a mansion with a dressing room for the children.

It is a peaceful room. There are a few nice rugs. And they tend to keep 'precious things' like their pottery money boxes on the bookshelf.

Its a funny old site though - lots on there are around £370 but if you trawl through there are some bargains.

We got it from there - good service etc, but to an extent I guess you do get what you pay for - DS's wallpaper is 2/3rds the size but cost £250, but its about 5 times as thick. DH grumbled a lot about the £50 one as its ever so thin so tore easily, took him longer to put up and he had to be careful. I made cups of tea and pretended to be interested. [hgrin]
