My bloody electric shower has stopped serving warm/hot water...can't afford to get it sorted and we all rely on it every day! arghhhhhhh Angry

My flat roof on my dining room has failed causing the plaster to blow and the paper to grow fungus. I also have damp on the other side of the room at the skirting board. Can push my finger through it.

Sooooo! what next?

and what disasters have you had this week? come join the disasters club.

blackwidow how absolutely rubbish for you

is this a stupid thing to say.. you can get cover for your boiler, hot water etc costing about a tenner a month ..er... once you get this fixed

ps my washing machine broke, new one arrives in two weeks, what to do

but not as bad as your situation

re damp, is it your house? is it not landlord or council problem? is it an adjoining wall?

SoloBlackWidowSpidersWebSite · 22/10/2010 00:45

Thanks Appletrees. Yes, my house, not adjoining wall and I just don't have an extra tenner left to pay for insurance, though I'd love to.

To be fair, I generally don't have appliance problems and the shower is 10 years old, but even so...

Sorry about your washing machine. We do rely on these things don't we?

I am going to be running to the neighbours, she is lovely, but you can't do that for your showers..

Is it just your shower? Have you got hot water everywhere else?

Appletrees · 22/10/2010 00:54

Insurance. Have you got any claim on your buildings insurance?

sonotboden · 22/10/2010 07:01

have you put a tarpaulin over flat roof?

one of those with a few bricks holding it down will work temporary miracles.

SoloBlackWidowSpidersWebSite · 22/10/2010 12:08

Yes, thankfully I have hot water elsewhere; had this happened in 2006/2007 my boiler died, so I'd have been in dreadful poo!

Can't claim for flat roof failure as they'll just say I should've maintained it, so they wont pay out for the plaster etc. May be able to with the other damp, but I can't deal with that right now.

Sonotboden, I've got some friends coming soon to temporarily repair the roof, until I can sort it out properly

I need to try for a grant to get my house rewired as I have no kitchen or hall lighting. They are original from the early 50's. I live in fear of them really.

Blackwidow, you should give the insurers a call.

SoloBlackWidowSpidersWebSite · 22/10/2010 15:12

The thing is, whenever you take out your policy, they ask you and you sign to say that your property is in good order. Mine is not. I have no money to maintain it to the standard that it needs to be.

My Ds said to me as soon as he knew I was going to have to replace th shower; 'Oh great! no Christmas presents!'
The whole thing is so disheartening

wickes have quite a few 'quick fix' products for roof and damp problems, (having similar problem myself with damp)

SoloBlackWidowSpidersWebSite · 22/10/2010 15:39

Thanks southeastastra. Sorry you are having problems too :(
