We have oil central heating, with a timer switch.

At the moment it goes on in the morning for a couple of hours before work/school then switches off until 4pm. It is on until 10pm.

We would like to save a bit on heating bills.

When we have the heating on, is it better to lower the thermostat and have the radiators in the rooms open all the way.

Or higher temperature and only open the radiators in the rooms we are using.

DH thinks that it might be better to have the heating on a lower temperature (ie. when the heating is not on full blast) rather than off altogether as is will not have to heat up from cold.

Do you have thermostatic valves on each radiator - you can then set the temperature for each radiator

if your boiler is not a condensing type consider changing it for a more efficient one

Do you have a proper thermostat? I mean one so that during 4pm-10pm the heating is not on on, it is only on if the temperature drops below what you have it set to.

It is a pretty new Boiler, just a couple of years old. We live in rented accommodation so looking for tips for saving oil using existing radiators and boiler.

Yes, we can set it to go down to whatever temperature we want. At the moment it is set to 14 so it is pretty cold when the heating is off. Or should it be lower?

We just have dials with numbers on the radiators. I guess that is nit what you mean?

the valves with numbers on are thermostatic radiator valves so just control the temperature for each room using those
