white or stainless steel spots in kitchen

The builders are just finishing our kitchen. I guess you would describe it as traditional, rather than modern, but it's not overly traditional. It has a 100 year old build-in cupboard, and then some new units that have painted oak doors, a belfast sink, a stainless steel range and fridge, and dark wooden floors. Colours are F&B -- I ended up with Slipper Satin on Walls, old cabinet and woodwork are Pointing, and new units are "Light Blue". I'm really pleased with how it looks, though slightly disappointed that I've just done exactly the same thing as last kitchen!

ANYWAY, the electrician installed stainless steel spots when I wanted white. He said he would switch them for me, but that he thinks stainless will look nicer as that's what we have for our switches and sockets (and range and fridge). I wanted the spots to be as inconspicuous as possible and the white will blend in with ceiling best. I just don't see them as a feature that is worth drawing attention to, but I am totally willing to be convinced otherwise if you guys think he's right.

Please weigh in. DH for once has no opinion!

I think I'd prefer stainless, myself.

+1 white looks cheap so I'd stick with the ones you've got.

The problem with white is that its never the same colour white. If it starts out the same, as its a different material, it will age differently and change eventually ( normally within a year ).

I felt exactly the same as you, wanted mine to blend in, but it just ends up looking cream and white so we got matt stainless steel, which matches fridge, stainless steel units and switches/sockets. Am pleased with them.

I prefer white for the same reason as you, I think it blends in better and I prefer not to make a feature of spotlights, esp in an old house.
