paint disappearing into wood..

Confused have just painted an outdoor bench, and on some bits (mainly the edges) the paint almost disappears as though the it's soaking into the wood. Have I done something wrong - is it because I haven't used a base coat of something (primer? what ever that is) first?

You do need to use a primer on wood as it does soak in.

bugger. I've done 2 coats on the top which is the main bit you see and it seems ok. Can't put primer on the bits that haven't taken now can I?

A lesson learnt..

proper way to do it is primer and undercoat then gloss

if you have already glossed and it has soaked in then you can either start again ....sand, prime, u/c gloss OR just try a few more coats of gloss and see if you can get a decent finish

call me lazy but there's no way I'm starting again so will just add another coat where needed. I don't actually mind it as is because it looks stained but not sure if it'll be protected from the elements
