Hi.. I am building a new kitchen.. i have chosen the kitchen, range, floor tiles, wall colours everything. my final question is this.. am I right in thinking the current "trend" is to NOT tile between the worksurface and the units.. would you tile? would you just do a row of narrow tiles along the bottom. or a wooden border like the worksurface.. or nothing..Im confused!

It's entirely up to you. We fitted an upstand and white metro tiles, which are fairly timeless so shouldn't date. Just having an upstand would look good although I'd probably put something behind the range to make it easier to wash off splashes. You could go for glass or metal.

We had granite worktops so chose to have a granite upstand along the back of the worktop, with a granite splashback behind the hob. Granite windowsills too.

It looks fab, really clean and smart, and with no tiles to co-ordinate with we can change the paint whever we want a change. The granite behind the hob looks lovely when the extractor-fan light is on, as it shows off the lovely crystals.

If you are having wood worktops the other alternative is to use glass as a splashback - you can paint behind it first, or use coloured glass.

thanks.. thats kind of what I was thinking. my range has a lid which will act as a splashback.. we are having wooden worktops so thought about a wooden upstand(is that what its called!). has anyone done this already and do you have problems with the walls getting dirty?? thanks
