Loft Conversion- planning permission needed?

Would appreciate any information/advice on converting my loft into a bedroom in my 2 bed terraced house.

I have read that one does not need planning permission unless one is actually extending the loft space, which I'm not.

I am hoping to build a staircase leading up to the loft, ann taking the width of this staircase from my bedroom.

I can probably get plumbing/electrics done quite cheap. I can get the boarding done myself.

The main costs, I should imagine, would be staircase and windows.

I also need experts to tell me if the loft floor can bear the weight safely.

Any advice whotsoever would be greatly appreciated- especially potential costs, anything I've overlooked.

unless you have an additional access don't whatever you do call it a bedroom. building/Fire regs now state that you must have a second exit from a loft ifit's going to be a bedroom.

You need to call your local planning department (district council) and ask. Ask for whatever they tell you in writing.

Hope that helps

Thanks Madascheese. I will do that today. Doesn't the window count as a second exit?

Not unless you have an approved fire exit from it - you need a fully fixed ladder.

But if I don't call it a bedroom- say I call it a study or playroom, then having a fire exit is no longer essential?
