Has anyone ever experienced their builders going into administration?

Halfway through building their house....?
I am at a loose end and was supposed to move in over a year ago. Please tell me something reassuring!

How much have you paid them?

bethjeff · 07/10/2010 22:26

10 % of the entire cost.... Price Waterhouse Cooper have taken over and I feel like I'm getting stonewalled

If you have paid them 10% and they are half-way through the job, how much do you think you should be getting back? Is it not possible to get another builder to take the job on? Or is this house only one of a development?

It's part of a development, all of the houses are standing but have no floors, stairs, electrics or plumbing etc.
They put the contract up for tender and Mactaggart and Mickel originally said that they would complete it to the same standard but are now backing out because they have agreed to build the Commonwealth village up here (Glasgow).
I've contacted them on numerous occassions to ask for a price to buy the property 'as is' outright and finish it myself but nobody answers my calls at all.

I feel like my money has disappeared into the ether.

Plus, many the houses on the same development are now showing signs of damage due to weather conditions.

God, you poor thing. I think phoning is not going to get you anywhere except to find the name of the person in charge of this account. Then send a solicitor's letter to him/her setting out your offer and demanding a response within a certain period.

I think it is very brave of you to try to sort the house out yourself but think about how much you want to be the only completed home on a building site (potentially). You might be better off contacting the NHBC to see if you can get your money back (I believe that they underwrite this sort of disaster in England and Wales, not sure if it extends to Scotland).

Thankyou for the advice... I have found out who a couple of my new neighbours will be so I am going to ask them if I can buy their houses- finish them all off and then sell them back to them for the same price.

That way there's more than one person on site (3 houses are already occupied as well) and I'll get better deals with the builders if I do multiple houses.

I want this house so much. It's stunning.
I'm still on mat leave so I'll do what I can and see where it leads me.

Lawyers office tomorrow and fingers crossed I'll see where it takes me
