4 poster bed

I have a modest 3 bedroom Victorian house and I am unsure wether to go for the 4 poster bed that I love. It fits but will it swamp the room and make it look small?

Well, you can minimise the visual effect by not putting very heavy curtains around it.

We have a carved mahogany four poster which is very heavy and chunky, and have heavy red curtains around it, but of course the curtains are tied back during the day so it doesn't look significantly bigger than a normal bed. Our room isn't that small, though, it's around 18 feet square.

If you're worried about yours looking too big, perhaps you could just have voile panels around it, and keep them tied back all the time, rather than proper curtains?

Was thinking of just having a white panel behind the headboard and across the top, just worried about the height or am I worrying unecesarily? Is that the point?!

I really wouldn't worry about the height. IMO, because no one else really sees your bedroom, you should have it exactly as you want and not bother about what anyone else may think.

Be careful about having a drape across the top, though, I had to remove ours as it was forever catching dust/spider webs etc. and it was a pain to have to keep removing it to wash.

I used to have one in a small bedroom and TBH it's pain. If you put curtains or drapes on it then it swamps the room. If you don't it looks bare. I ended up taking the top posts off. If you want the 4 post without it swamping the room you could go for a metal one - like this

Or one with posts but no top bars.

Or do what we've done in our 150 year old cottage and have a very modern bed. The house speaks for itself so we didn't feel the need to make the interior look "period".

agree with mumble chum but yes it will swamp your room and make it look small. but bedrooms are supposed to be cosy and romantic, not cold and cavernous (imho). at least thats what i tell DH.
