What's it like to live in Hitchin / Letchworth / Baldock?

Hello lovely Hertfordshire people!

We currently live in South East London, but have been planning for some tim to move to somewhere that isn't!

So please tell me what it's like where you live...what are the people like? the schools? Is it a fun place to live, or quiet?
Would you recommend it?

We got a good vibe visiting Hitchin yesterday.

Any feedback very gratefully received.

Just saw this thread! Well, I moved to Letchworth in March. We chose it over Hitchin because Letchworth was considerably more affordable (cheaper than Baldock, too). So if you've got the money then Hitchin probably does have more to do - certainly more pubs and restaurants.

I do really like Letchworth however and would recommend it for those looking in the area on a bit more of a budget.

I've just come across this thread and found it very interesting as we too are considering a move to Hitchin (from nearby over-priced St Albans).

The over-compensating parents situation is a concern, but hopefully once we get there I'll be able to tap into a Mumsnet gathering!

Hi people,

Just read threads found them interesting as I'm also moving to hitchin very soon :)
Although I'm very nervous as I have 4 children aged 13,12,7,2 and are concerned about there education and clubs and stuff for them to do does anyone know any good clubs for them to join to meet new friends???

I have lived in villages nearby for all my adult life.

Hitchin is the nicest of the 3 towns you mention - much more going on, better shops, good schools.

Letchworth, IMO, doesn't seem to have much going for it - but not much against either. Really rather boring but, because of quaker, vegetarian roots has quite a lot of lentilly stuff going on. Several not-so-good estates here. No night life.

Baldock excellent for schools, shopping naff (except for v v good butcher) unless you love giant Tesco which has seen off everything else. Old coaching town (was on A1 until bypassed) and still many pubs.

Oh, and apart from good train service to London, similar to Cambridge which is lovely.

Always go for Hitchin over Letchworth. Much more friendly, the shops are miles better and the teenagers don't look evil ;) The only reason to go to Letchworth is to use the cinema XD The primaries are good but not so good on secondaries and the catchment areas are a nightmare...

Kerdazzle- there's a youth group at Grace Baptist Church in Hitchin opposite Asdas thats always been fun ;)

hitchin is very quaint, nice shops, and a very old feel.
