Wallpaper stripping advice

Hi,
Any advice on how best to strip wallpaper from a wall without damaging the plaster behind as I just want to paint it once stripped.

Been advised to avoid a steamer.

Thanks

yes, avoid a steamer, we used one, and it pulled half the plaster off our wall (It was a very old house)

I would love to know the answer to this too, as we're planning to redecorate a bedroom soon, and need to remove the wallpaper.
We would love to actually complete a whole DIY project without having to call in the (expensive) experts!

Know what you mean Botters. We've always had decorators but now I've finished work money is a bit tighter so need to get stuck in myself.

Having a massive flood downstairs for about nine months seemed to help us - most of the wallpaper more or less fell off. If that isn't convenient Wink then you could try a scraper and soaking any bits left on with a sponge maybe? We used a steamer with no problems though and most of the walls have been fine (50s semi not redecorated since the 70s, according to notes written in marker pen under the paper, though I realise that isn't particularly old).

Just damp it down with a sponge, leave it to soak in for 10 minutes or so (redamping as often as you like!) and go at it with a nice flat scraper. If it's waterproof paper, you'll have to either score through the top layer or peel it off, then damp down the underneath layer and strip that. If you score the top layer, do it gently - you can buy a thing with wheels which will do it shallow and not score your plaster behind, best not to use the edge of your flat wallpaper scraper as you can end up gouging through too far!

Steamers aren't too bad if you don't use them for too long at a time, so long as the plaster underneath is ok, but I find just a bucket of water and a sponge is the safest thing.

I like the idea of a bucket of water, a sponge and a scraper. Will have a little go this weekend and see what happens.
