Trying to find 500 mm drawers to fit a kitchen cupboard - any ideas?

I have a friend who is trying to find some drawers for a 500 mm unit/cupboard. I think she is intending to use them for kids bits so wire baskets are no good. The unit has a cupboard door but she wants to open the door and then have drawers to pull out. She was quoted something ridiculous like £800 from one place! As far as I am aware she has tried Magnet, Howdens, Homebase, B&Q. She thought she has struck gold at Ikea at about £8 a drawer but they are specific to Ikea units and not standard size and too deep so while they fit width ways they do not fit on the depth as they are 200mm too deep. Does anyone have an idea of where she could get these standard drawers from? Many thanks

Just get a local carpenter/handy man to make them from mdf and paint with non toxic paint.Should cost no more than about £20 for mdf and buy the runners on ebay or at a diy store.Alternatively you could replace the whole unit from ikea or wickes etc with a drawer unit for £100 max

Could she not get wire drawers from B&Q and then just put some hardboard on the bottom so that stuff doesn't fall through?

Not sure I was that clear in my original email. She has a cupboard. It is new. She does not want to replace, She just wants 500mm drawers to put in and is having difficulty sourcing them. She does not want wire or wicker just normal drawers. Thanks

You need the blum internal drawers then but they are £££

She won't pay it. Don't really understand how what she is looking for is so difficult to get reasonably priced but it is.

I was going to go the IKEA route too and add some drawers to a cabinet. I have the Rationell catalogue in front of me and they do do less deep drawers (ie 45 cm, but only in 60 or 80 cm wide.) I wonder if they have something else that might work - like drawers from the closet range or one of the storage ranges?

This is not at all difficult, I have done it. You need to buy them from a kitchen supplier like Isaac Lord or Woodfit. Depending on how much you want to spend you can get the "Metabox" system (metal sides and you cut your own front/back/base) or Tandembox where you get the whole drawer to assemble. If they are to go inside a cupboard when the drawers are open (an innerdrawer) you need an extra front piece that fits inside the runners rather than in front like a display drawer front.

The components aren't very cheap (unless you go for Metabox like we did) but they shouldn't be £800 either. Then you need someone who can measure and drill accurately to install them.

cheap and cheerful
