Repainting pine chest of drawers

Willabywallaby · 02/10/2010 16:09

My DH has sanded and repainted a pine chest of drawers white. He used a primer and a satin finish white paint, but the yellow of the pine has come through the paint leaving streaks of yellow.

It seems to have been adsorbed into the paint rather than the paint not covering it.

Is it possible to stop this happening, he's done 2 top coats but it's still there.

Thanks

He could try an extra-strength primer, such as Dulux Supergrip or Zinsser 123. These are better at preventing leak-through of stains, resins etc than ordinary primers.

Wow, swift response, thanks Grin

Remember to check the label on the primer, as some are designed to be covered with oil-based top coats and some with water-based. Make sure you use the recomended type of top coat for the primer you've used. Good luck Smile

He's slapping on more primer as we speak... Not sure he's done the 3 step process they suggest on the tin, although he says it's a primer and undercoat. Just as long as the children don't get covered in it I think he's happier with a porblem.

Just wanted to update. Chest of drawers finished at last!

DH wouldn't listen about advice I found ie 80sMum and phoned a place that dips/strips doors. I took a drawer there to show them and they gave me their advice sheet on how to paint the doors after. They recommend Zinsser oil based primer, which of course they didn't stock in our local homebase and only had the shellac or a spray at B&Q (my most hated shop!). So spray was bought (was cheaper than the tin), did the trick and top coat on. I'm so pleased my DS1 now has a chest of drawers.

Thanks for the advice.
