ideas for decorating a shared bedroom please!

My 2 DDs (5 and 7) share a bedroom - DD1 is a real girly girl, loves pink etc, and DD2 is a tomboy, and hates pink, loves blue and 'boystuff'as she calls it!

Their bedroom badly needs decorated and they have decided they want two pink walls and two blue walls (very democratic!). Not sure about this myself. I thought about going down an ocean theme - dolphins mermaids etc.

What do you think - any ideas?

Just from your thread title (so before I had read the pink/blue walls thing), I was going to say that when I was a child sharing with my sister we wanted nothing more than a clear delineation of what was her side and what was my side. We actually wanted to draw a line. We got on very well, but if my mum had let us indulge our territorial instincts we'd both have been really chuffed Grin. So maybe don't rule out letting them carve out separate identities, even if it looks a bit Hmm to an adult.

Or could you have very sheer curtains to split the room? They could be tied back during play and then used to do that all-important dividing line. Bookshelves back-to-back would be better but you'd have to have a huge room.

How about white walls and their choice of wall stickers on their side? Or a vast pinboard each on their wall?

what I think is lovely is white, with gingham accessories

my friends little girl has a beautiful bedroom done in christmas colours! so it's white, but lots of red, dark green and gold. it's really nice

i saw a great one on a DIY show once too which was white with red gingham curtains and red accessories

however... if they're adamant about half pink half blue then do it! if you can't have a crazy bedroom when you're little when can you???

I did 2 walls red and 2 walls blue for my DS's sharing a room.

Thanks for your replies.

Heartsease - they're not quite at the stage where they want to have separate areas ( I am sure that will come soon enough!) but I am wondering if I just have to let them decide what colours go on the walls and put my sunglasses on every time I go in there!

I am no interior designer so it was never going to be like something out of one of those posh homes magazines!

So would you do opposite walls the same colour, or two adjacent walls? It's a reasonably big room, but not very bright.

i would do adjacent walls... so one has a blue corner and one has a pink corner

Heartsease · 02/10/2010 12:10

Yep, definitely adjacent in my opinion. You could of course paint the room white like thisisyesterday suggests, and create a similar two-cornered effect by adding accessories or details in the colour they like, e.g. rugs and painted furniture, duvet covers and so on. The two-corned effect would still be there, but less need for sunglasses. That would be good if the room's not bright. Or you could paint the colours only up waist height with a neutral above, though you would probably need to add some kind of border or dado rail.

If it's a darkish room then the blue is going to suck up the light a bit, unless you go for very pale shades. Adjacent walls would definitely be best I think.

My dd and dss share a room which I painted White. They then chose 4 tester pots of paint they liked then we did hand and foot prints all over the Walls!! They love it and it looks quite cool, am planning on adding to it in a year and they can see how much they've grown.

I'd go for pastel shades of blue and pink - and pick a pink with quite a bit of blue in the mix. That way the colours should work well together.

Take a look at this bed linen for an idea of how lovely the colours can look together.

I love your idea wallababy!

Thanks Piprabbit - probably less need for sunglasses that way!
