Rental home unsafe?

We had to move in a hurry and basically opted for a flat that was conveniently located and reasonably cheap. There are some things that I didn't notice at the time I signed the contract but have become really obvious since moving in - the main two being that it is ferociously damp (stuff that we have stored under one bed is now wet to the touch, not just damp) and one of the bedrooms has no means of escape. It's hard to describe but, although this bedroom is on the ground floor, it doesn't have a window just a skylight which is part of the side return extension and means that if there were a fire in the hall, the occupants (my children Sad) would be trapped as they cannot possibly get up to the skylight and then smash it (and then climb over a stretch of glazed roof to get to safety - could anyone?). Before anyone says that I should sleep in that room, I'm in the really damp one which I think is giving me a chest infection.

We signed for six months and have five months left to go - is there anyone at the council we could contact who would be able to declare the flat unfit or that bedroom not a habitable room? We could then move out without consequences, otherwise the landlord will just tell us to put up with it.

I can't remember the title but there is a department at your council for this. Call their switchboard in the morning and ask who advises about housing unfit for habitation. Don't say anything to your landlord until they have seen it. Make sure you have working smoke alarms in place and take it from there. Also have a look at your tenanacy agreement. It should details under which you can break the agreement before the 6 months is up. Your deposit should by law be held under the deposit protection scheme so you should be able to get that back. Best of luck.
