I have them on mine but you'll probably get lots of people telling you they ae faddy.

noddyholder · 23/09/2010 16:05

I really like them too. They have a double glazing like effect on old sashes if well done

ChippyMinton · 23/09/2010 16:10

Do you mean on the inside? I like them, Not faddy, been around for ages, but they are expensive, aren't they?

Not fake ones stuck on the outside though Shock

noddyholder · 23/09/2010 16:15

Oh no I mean inside too outside is a def no no unless you are heidi!

DastardlyandSmugly · 23/09/2010 16:32

Yes they do have a double glazing effect (which is great as our sashes really need replacing). Ours cost about £1400 in total and we have them on a bay window downstairs and two upstairs windows as the front.

MadAboutQuavers · 23/09/2010 16:37

Inside - very cool

Outside - very common

(In my opinionated opinion...)

Chippychop · 23/09/2010 21:27

Plantation shutters still look lovely, be they full or cafe style.don't go too white if your house is painted white on the outside

wallababy · 24/09/2010 07:52

Ooh no definitely inside!!! Just that in the past 6 months about 6 houses down our road have got them, so wasn't sure if it was just a "fashion" although a rather expensive one!! I think we will go for it and get the cafe style in an off White colour, thanks for the suggestion on how much to pay we have the same amount of windows as you.
Any recommendations for companies?? I am in north Kent.

I have genuine Victorian shutters on the outside of my house, so ner.

I have to say, I really can't see the point of even genuine shutters on the outside of a house - we'd have to go outside to shut them, and surely that's not very practical at the beginning and end of every day. So what on earth did people have them for?

RamblingRosa · 24/09/2010 08:37

I really like them. I've noticed a few victorian houses round my way which have replaced beautiful sash windows with horrible double glazed modern windows but because they've got nice shutters somehow it doesn't look so bad IYSWIM.

I worry they might be a bit dark though.

scaryteacher · 24/09/2010 09:41

In Belgium most houses have what would be termed as exterior security shutters which are operated from inside and come right down over the window and provide great insulation is winter and can be used to keep the house cool in summer.

I love them, very practical and add security to boot.

pigindisguise · 24/09/2010 10:00

I would love some but can't afford it at the moment. However I don't know if I'd go for full or cafe style. Not many people have the full ones so it would be nice to have something different, but I like the fact that the cafe style let light in

RamblingRosa · 24/09/2010 15:32

Are they v expensive?

dustythedolphin · 24/09/2010 15:37

Oooh I love inside shutters opn period houses Envy and window seat

The are sooo cool on tall period town houses...

I thought outside shutters were more appropriate for hot countries, to keep the sun out?

berno · 24/09/2010 19:32

I had inside shutters on my bathroom window in a previous house - we had to make them ourselves because they were attrociously expensive to buy - but they were so lovely and the one item I missed after the move. Our current house is very sleek/modern so it's a no go for now.

If you like them, go for it! cafe style is good.

twolittledarlings · 25/09/2010 22:47

Anybody have any recommendations for shutter company.

We want the cafe style white colonial shutters too as our house is a victorian house with bay / sash windows.

We'll need to have them in the front downstairs and upstairs windows and also a massive one in the back living rooms which we will need a 7 bi-fold one shutter.

Can anyone recommend a good quality / fitted company which does these?

HerHonesty · 26/09/2010 13:24

we've used shutters of distinction (wouldnt recommend) and shutterly fabulous) (would recommend). I've seen a friend who had sanderson or hilarys cant remember but they were terribly installed.

taffetacat · 28/09/2010 20:33

We are in North Kent too and have white shutters in our living room, the whole house has recently had a big redesign/extension and is very contemporary.

DH is quite handy and didn't want to pay for all the unnecessary (for us ) consultation/measurement fees so we got ours from The Shutter Shop - its in Fulham, lovely Sloaney salespeople, DH visited a few times as he works in town, but essentially we did the measurements and all the fittings, they just delivered. We have a row of 5 in our living room, and they cost about £500.
