URGENT question - hard or soft water supply to an American type fridge?

We are having a new kitchen including a fridge with ice/water dispenser - the survey guy thought there was a hard water supply behind where the fridge is going but the fitter is here and there isn't. What water do you have in your fridge/what would you do? We've always drunk the hard water from a little spout but we won't have that in the new kitchen as we thought we'd get it from the fridge (we use the softened to boil for tea/coffee/cooking and only use hard to drink/for squash/for baby milk)

The fitter looked at me as if I was mad when I said I wanted hard water in the fridge. (probably as he now has to channel pipes through the floor so it's more work).

Advice please!

hi - soft water shouln't be drunk at all - nor for making ice, tea/coffee or cooking veg etc. boiling it does not help - the softening process leave a salt residue which is not good for your long term health - the odd glass won't do you any harm - also it doesn't taste very good in my opinion so sorry to say i think you need to get on with the digging
