The 5 most unusual houses I have viewed

The vendor who announced after our offer was accepted and after the survey had been done that they would not exchange contracts until the end of the academic year. This was back in November 1990 but I have always remembered it. They really did expect us to wait 8 months and were shocked when we didn't.

The house where you could not live for 2 or 3 months every year because the spring water supply dried up in dry weather. Luckily they told us this during the tour.

The house that neither us nor the Agent could find when we went for a viewing. We followed the instructions to the letter but there was no "secluded cottage" in sight when we arrived at the crossroads. We didn't find it using revised instructions either!

The house where the Estate Agents particulars didn't include a single picture of the inside of the house. When we looked inside we realised why!

The house in a valley that didn't get any direct sun from late Nov to late Jan due to high hills surrounding it on three side.

The house where the boxroom was locked and we had to ask for the key so we could look in it. Went in to discover it was painted floor to ceiling black with black carpet and stank (teenage boy).

The house where to flush away the smelly poo my ds had deposited in the toilet we had to get a bucket of water from the garden!

This one is from my childhood but I'll never forget it - The one where the whole room was 'wallpapered' in pornographic pictures. My parents quickly dragged me out!

The one in which DD screamed and had hysteria all the way round and then saw a man in the kitchen cooking pasta. We later found out that the previous owner had a heart attack and was found dead in the kitchen with a saucepan of burnt food a week later Shock

The house which combined an ikea kitchen in one corner of the bedroom and had an arm chair in the bathroom. There was another kitchen but it was extremely dilapidated with cupboards having fallen off walls, mould everywhere and festering dishes

The one in which the owner folloed us into every room and asked "so do you like it do you want to make an offer now?"

The one which was supposedly empty but very clearly had a squatter in it, EA tried to cover up his obvious confusion at not being able to unlock one of the doors

The one with photos of the lady's spaniels (and rosettes they had one) covering every inch of wall in every room

The one with a photo on the wall of the owner pretty much naked, oiled and striking a muscly pose in front of his bed

DH has just arrived home all excited because he has a new entry for this thread. He looked at this house this morning and could not wait to report back by mobile phone

It looked like a very rural but fairly typical farm house that had been extended over the years by the present owners. They had lived there for nearly 30 years and were happy to tell him and the Agent that they had done all the work (including the plumbing and the electrics) themselves.

It turns out that none of the work had planning permission and none of it had ever been inspected by outside agencies.

The house where there was a toilet in the bedroom - to compount the felony the furniture was arranged so the toilet was alongside the bed (where a normal person would put a bedside table)

The house where there was only one bathroom, which would have been fine, but becasue it was a large room the owner had put a bed in there and said it was very handy to have the extra bedroom. As someone who can't go through the night without getting up to use the loo I can't imagine how that would work.

The house that the Estate Agent had obviously never visited (or even read the particulars)
Firstly, he couldn't open the front door so he asked me to climb through a window and see if it would open from inside! He then walked through the house flinging open doors saying 'and this is {long pause as he frantically looked round the room} the bedroom'

The house where the artist owner had painted a mural of his naked wife on the wall.

The house where the toilet was on a raised platform in the bathroom meaning any man of more than 5'9 would be unable to wee standing up as they would bump their head on the ceiling.

The house that was falling to bits (think extension kitchen with a tin roof that was flapping in the wind, huge cracks in the wall so you could see through them, exposed wiring etc) where the owner kept saying 'it only needs a bit of pointing and it'll be a lovely finished house'

I could go on - our house hunting and whole moving process was a long drawn out affair!

We bought a house that had swirly carpet everywhere, at least two strikingly different wallpapers in every room and Barbie-pink gloss paint on the hall ceiling. It was structurally sound and we knew we could change the decor. We could have changed it, but on the whole didn't get around to it until we decided to sell it about 5 years later. Hmm It was looking pretty good for the last 3 months or so that we lived in it. Grin

We didn't buy the house that had lots of locked rooms (with padlocks) and had a glass panel on the floor of the 3rd floor landing to allow light onto the 2nd floor landing. There was no option but to walk on the glass to get to the rooms on the 3rd floor, and it really didn't look or feel at all safe.
