Earwigs

Ok, in the past 2 weeks we have found about 10 earwigs in the house. I thought it was because DH was stood outside the open back door & the kitchen light & outside sensor light was on (apparently earwigs are supposed to be fond of light) but I just hate finding them in the house. We have found 5 in the kitchen, 2 in the playroom, 1 in the living room, 1 in the dining room & 1 in the conservatory. We do like to have the windows open a lot but not at night when the lights are on.

Do you think 10 is excessive? Would you get someone out to check if we have a nest? We have had the garden cut back but this was after we started finding the earwigs in the house & since then we've found the 2 in the playroom.
Oh & please, no gruesome stories about earwigs or anything, my skin is already crawling Sad

We've had terrible problems with earwigs in the last few weeks. They're in the poppy heads, the aquilegia heads, scuttling through the kitchen, crawling over the sunflowers etc. My parents have said they're having the same problem. Weird isn't it?

Well, that does make me feel better but I am sorry you are dealing with them too. Wonder if it is the season for earwigs at the moment? I am forever looking all over the place for them!!

Oh poor you! Earwigs are the grimmest :(

Last year we had an infestation and my dd's play house was their des res. I found an earwig nest which contained a dyson cylinders FULL of earwigs which I then proceeded to pour a kettle of boiling water on.

Earwigs go pink when cooked like little shrimps!

Thankfully this year I've not really seen any.

My dogs old wooden kennel was infested with earwigs a few years ago & i rang pest control only to be told that there was nothing to get rid of earwigs , the only advice i was given was to get rid of any old / rotten wood as this attracts earwigs . So we got the dog a new plastic kennel & no more earwigs Smile

I find about 10 an hour in our house at the moment! I won't go into details if you are sqeamish about earwigs, but out bath is not our own and nor is the loo on occaision.

Thanks for the thoughts about rotting wood. We have lots of that! :)

They also like living underneath doormats! If it makes you feel better, out here in steamy Texas the big cockroaches seem to eat most of them. Can't wait to come home......can't wait to come home........

Yes they do like damp places, apparently. I am going to ask the guy who cut back the garden last week if he thinks there could be anything that is attracting them. We do have some pots in the garden, wonder if they like them...ugh I just want them to GO AWAY!!

They're everywhere at the moment - when we open our windows there are literally dozens in the gap by the hinges and they all fall in onto the window sill. It's not very pretty but they aren't all that bad are they? Cockroaches and such like are much worse imo.

Quote from wikipedia:

"Many earwig species display maternal care, which is uncommon among insects. Female earwigs are known to take care of their eggs, and even after they have hatched as nymphs will continue to watch over offspring."

Maybe MN should adopt the earwig as insect of choice!

GrendelsMum · 14/09/2010 11:38

I think it's an earwiggy year, this year. There's nothing particular in our house that I think's attracting them, but they're just pottering around a bit. I wonder if they've been disturbed from the rotting wood we used to have all over the house, and are having to rehome now it's good fresh wood?

I like the idea of earwigs as the official MN insect. They're probably wandering round looking for their local meetup.

LovingTheSunshine · 14/09/2010 15:08

I did read on a website that you should just leave earwigs alone as they don't do any harm. We do have a very old mat (it was here when we moved in) outside the back door that I am going to throw away...or should I say get DH to throw away lol!!
