Have you added a dormer extension in your roof?

If so, would you mind telling me:

  • roughly how much it cost
  • How long it took to build
  • Whether you think it increased the value of your house?
  • If you lived in it while you had it done

and finally...

  • are you glad you did it?!

TIA Smile

We have a dormer extension to rear of loft roof.

It cost about £35k (4ish years ago)

Yes it has added masses of value as we have a big bedroom and lovely bathroom

it took a couple of months to complete IIRC

yes we lived here...had no where else to go.As the mess was all upstairs it wasn't so bad....

yes yes yes am very pleased we did it. everyone does it here, no one can afford to move!

It's something I'm interested in, it will cost us mega money to move to a 4 bed new build which would be the same size as our 3 bed terraced.
We were thinking of making it into a 4.

Just need some money first

We had a dormer put in the whole width of the house when we had a loft conversion done.

Without a dormer, the usuable space would have been tiny, but now we have a 20' x 20' room.

We lived in the house at the time, and have no regrets. It's not a hard job for a carpenter to do.

Thanks folks, we're thinking of buying a 2 bed house we can afford and then stick a dormer on top to add an extra room (and hopefully make our money back when it comes to selling it on in a few years). It sounds like it would be doable but whether to have it done while we're still renting (and not have to live on site but waste shed loads of cash on the rental) or just do it when we really need it and live with it.
Also need to find the cash (which is obviously a shedload). But sounds like it would be a good long-term plan either way.
